The governor of Vermont says marriage rights for same-sex couples won’t bring his state any economic benefit, even though a report released earlier this year indicates otherwise.
Gov. Jim Douglas, a Republican, addressed the issue in response to a question the Blade submitted during an event Thursday at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.
Douglas called same-sex marriage “a matter of great debate” and “intense personal opinion.” He also noted that he sees the matter “quite differently from other issues that we confront.”

A coalition of gay groups have filed language to repeal Proposition 8, the initiative that banned gay marriage in California.
Although larger gay groups such as Equality California have opted to wait until 2012 to challenge the ban, groups such as Love Honor Cherish, WhiteKnot.org, and Equality Network have submitted the proposal for the November 2010 election.
If passed, the proposal will replace Section 7.5 of the state constitution – “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognised in California” – with “Marriage is between only two persons and shall not be restricted on the basis of race, color, creed, ancestry, national origin, sex, gender, sexual orientation, or religion.”

Lesbian and Gay Parents and Their Children: Research on the Family Life Cycle is the first book-length review and analysis of research on parenting by gay and lesbians and suggests that the outcomes well-being of their children are no different than those raised by heterosexual parents
Last week the American Psychological Association published Dr. Abbie E. Goldberg’s Lesbian and Gay Parents and Their Children: Research on the Family Life Cycle, a comprehensive summary and analysis of the research on gay and lesbian parents and their families to date. Goldberg’s new book is the first full-length analysis of the research on gay parenting, summarizing research data on the subject from the 1970′s to the present day. The research is consistent in suggesting that the outcomes and well-being of children raised by gay and lesbian parents are no different than those of children raised by heterosexual parents.
According to Dr. Goldberg, Lesbian and Gay Parents and Their Children: Research on the Family Life Cycle is a response to the increased public awareness and debate about both marriage equality and lesbian/gay parenting, and the corresponding growth in research on this topic. While a number of journal articles and book chapters summarize much of the research in this area, no in-depth book-length synthesis and analysis has existed to date.

The tiny South American nation of Uruguay continues to outpace America in the arena of GLBT equality: after allowing gays to serve in the military and preparing the way for family equality in the realm of adoptions for same-sex parents, Uruguay is now on the way to approving a law that respects each individual’s gender identity.
Though most people identify with their anatomical gender, there are some who feel that their true selves are trapped in bodies of the wrong sex.
Such transgendered individuals have become more visible in recent years, but in the United States they, like gays and lesbians, are afforded only limited rights and protections relevant to their status as sexual minorities. To date, there are no federal protections in place for transgendered citizens, just as not federal statutes offer protection to gays and lesbians.

A Wisconsin gay rights group has hired a national attorney to challenge a lawsuit aimed at striking down domestic partnership benefits enacted in the most recent state budget.
The group Wisconsin Family Action filed suit in July challenging the constitutionality of the state’s new Domestic Partnership Registry. Getting one’s name on the registry grants you the right to visit a partner in the hospital, help make end of life decisions and inherit assets when a partner dies.
Christopher Clark of the Lambda Legal Defense Fund has filed a brief on behalf of FAIR Wisconsin asking the State Supreme Court to reject the case.

Although the DC Council and Mayor Adrian Fenty are poised to make marriage for same-sex couples a reality in the District of Columbia, this advance is potentially threatened by the remote possibility of a referendum or a more likely a Congressional intervention.
Openly gay DC Councilmember David Catania [I-At Large] has drafted a bill. He plans to introduce it soon, but Catania told EDGE he is not playing his hand as to exactly when–describing himself “not eager to telegraph to the other side when I plan to introduce it; but it will be within the next 60 days.”
With 10 co-sponsors and the support of the mayor, Catania said he is most concerned with outside interests moving in and making waves.

A group opposed to Proposition 8 plans to submit ballot language to repeal the measure with the attorney general’s office today (Thursday, September 24), one day before the suggested deadline.
John Henning, executive director of Love Honor Cherish, said on Monday, September 21, that the language was still “in flux” but that it was “pretty straightforward.”
He said the proposal would be to strike down Prop 8, which voters passed last November that amended the state constitution and banned same-sex marriage, and include a clause making clear that repealing the measure would not require religious institutions to perform same-sex marriages.

Elsewhere in the news, Gandul reads about the latest INSOMAR survey revealing the lack of intolerance of Romanians against homosexuals and Rroma people. Marriage among homosexuals hits a disapproval rate of 90.5% while marriage with a Rroma is disconsidered by 53.3% of the Romanians, the survey claims.
70.9% of the Romanians do not want to have in their close circle a homosexual while 38% showed that they would not like a gypsy. Homosexuals are not approved of, according to a study, neither as neighbours: 54% of those questioned said that they would like to have such a neighbour but 29% said they would accept a Rroma origin neighbor.
According to the report, 54% of those interviewed said that they would not like to work with homosexuals while 25.3% do not like the company of gypsies.

What’s the deal with these Republican “intellectuals”? One tried to peddle the idea that all pornography is gay. Now there is a representative from Iowa (a good day to the Hamers) who thinks pushing for gay marriage is really a desire to transform the country into a socialist haven.
Iowa’s Rep. Steve King is no fan of same sex marriage. No biggie there. Free country, first amendment, blah, blah. All that good stuff. However, it would be nice if he had the decency to come up with reasons that are not loony.
“If there’s a push for a socialist society where the foundations of individual rights and liberties are undermined and everybody is thrown together living collectively off one pot of resources earned by everyone, this is one of the goals they have to go to, same sex marriage, because it has to plow through marriage in order to get to their goal. They want public affirmation, they want access to public funds and resources.”
