Chelsea Montgomery-Duban wanted to invite people to see inside her family, so she used YouTube. There, she posted a message told through laughter and tears the speech the 16-year-old gave while standing at the wedding altar of the men she refers to as “Dad” and “Daddy.”
“According to me, marriage is not just a man and a woman. It is two people who love each other and promise to be together in sickness and in health,” Montgomery-Duban says in the video.
“Marriage is not even a beautiful white dress. But it is love blossoming between two individuals and the promise that what they have together can only get better.”

The campaign ’No on 1 – Protect Maine Equality,’ which aims to preserve marriage equality in the state, found allies in several big names in Maine politics when a memorandum was sent to the state’s media outlets denouncing rival ’Yes on 1’ television ads.
Senate President Elizabeth Mitchell, Speaker of the House Hannah Pingree, Rep. Emily Cain, former Attorney General Steven Rowe, former Attorney General James Tierney, Dean Peter Pitegoff (University of Maine School of Law), and Professor David Cluchey (University of Maine School of Law) affixed their names to the memorandum, which pulled apart the politics of the TV advertisements.
Contrary to the content of the ads, which feature divisive language and ideas that border on anti-gay propaganda, the memo reads, “a No on 1 vote means gay and lesbian couples in Maine and their children will be treated equally under the law. By contrast, a Yes on 1 vote means that same-sex couples and their children will continue to face continued obstacles and legal discrimination.”

Remember this couple? You should. They were featured in an ad scaring California voters into passing Prop 8 by telling them the lie that children would forced to learn about homosexuality in schools if the measure was passed.
They’re back. This time in an ad scaring Maine voters into voting ‘Yes on 1′ by telling the same lie, using the same footage.
Schubert Flint, the consultants behind Prop 8 in California, are also behind these ads. Surprise.

The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals agreed today to expedite a case about releasing the names and addresses of everyone who signed Referendum 71. A three-judge panel will hear oral arguments on October 14 in Pasadena, California. Each side will have 15 minutes to present their case.
By signing R-71 petitions, voters indicated that a law to extend the state-granted rights of marriage to same-sex partners should be put on the ballot, ultimately in an attempt to repeal them. But in a bizarre twist of hypocrisy, anti-gay Protect Marriage Washington now claims that the signers are a minority—because they were trying to limit rights of a minority, you see—at risk of harm if their identities are released.
Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna doesn’t buy the claim—arguing the state’s open-government laws trump fears of people who put their name on a public document—and attorneys from his office will argue before the federal court. The Washington Coalition for Open Government, a nonprofit run by former state representative Toby Nixon, is also arguing to release the names of R-71 signers.

A powerful and well-produced commercial can make even hardwired Republicans more sympathetic to the cause of marriage equality, according to a new study.
Released by the group Truth and Hope, a liberal grassroots group, the study looked at the effects of targeted marriage equality advertisements on a group of voters. Researchers surveyed 851 self-declared Democrats, Republicans, and independents and found that the majority of all parties reported that an ad supportive of marriage equality was effective.
The commercial in question featured a heterosexual baby-boomer couple speaking fondly of their gay son, his partner, and the gay couple’s children.

Trapped in a bad marriage? Sorry, really. But you’ve got nothing on Larissa Chism and Tara Ranzy, a divorce-seeking Indiana couple doomed to live unhappily ever after and after and after by a legal Catch-22.
Chism, a psychiatrist, and Ranzy, an educator, wed in Toronto in January 2005. In March of this year, they filed a divorce petition.
In many respects, their case was rubber-stamp simple. They had no children; they had already divided their property; neither was pregnant. Unfortunately, an eagle-eyed court employee noticed the one complicating fact in their one-page joint submission: Larissa and Tara are both women’s names. Indiana does not grant or recognize same-sex marriages.

As Albania prepares to legalise gay marriage, Kosovo’s government says such a move is not even on the radar.
Arian is an attractive young man who lives in Prishtina. His phone rings during our coffee break and he insists he must take it, since it is his partner. However, most do not know that his partner is a man.
“Sorry, he gets mad when I don’t pick up, you know the way relationships go,” he says.

A poll released on Tuesday showed that the vote in Washington on Referendum 71, the measure to approve the state’s domestic partnership law, is going to be extremely close, with a narrow margin of respondents saying they would pass the measure.
The poll by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research asked 569 likely voters in the November election if they would approve or reject Referendum 71. According to The Stranger, 51% of respondents said they would approve it, 44% said they would reject it, and 5% were undecided.
The tight margin could reflect the more conservative turnout of an off-year election, the specificity of the ballot language, or effective rhetoric from Referendum 71 opponents.

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo is emerging as a supporter of same-sex marriage.
Ayanbadejo attended an event sponsored by Equality Maryland last week to celebrate the relocation of its headquarters from Silver Spring to Baltimore. The appearance came after he opined in the Huffington Post that “we will look back in 10, 20, 30 years and be amazed that gays and lesbians did not have the same rights as everyone else.”
“If Britney Spears can party it up in Vegas with one of her boys and go get married on a whim and annul her marriage the next day, why can’t a loving same-sex couple tie the knot?” he wrote in the piece.
