Voters will weigh in on same-sex marriage and local spending at polls or town meetings across the state tomorrow. But with the economy still limping, it won’t be easy for officials to persuade voters that this is the year to approve big-ticket bonds or hefty appropriations.

On the marriage question, voters in 133 of the Granite State’s 221 towns will find a resolution calling on lawmakers to settle the same-sex marriage debate not in Concord, but at the ballot box. State Rep. David Bates, R-Windham, has spearheaded the effort to place the non-binding resolution before thousands of voters. Bates believes the resolution, which asks state lawmakers to put a constitutional amendment defining marriage before voters, has widespread support.
But, in 15 towns, voters changed the wording of the resolution to nullifying its original intent, Bates said. Another five communities that hold town meetings in May still have an opportunity to add the resolution to the warrant, he said. Legislation allowing same-sex marriage became state law on Jan. 1.
