Indonesia: Islamic Groups Raid Gay and Lesbian Conference at Hotel in Surabaya

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Rights groups in Indonesia are calling on police to arrest members of several Islamic groups who raided a hotel occupied by a number of Gay and Lesbian advocates in Surabaya over the weekend. The advocates were in East Java to attend an international conference on homosexual issues. Some observers say the Islamic groups actions are a sign religious conservatism is on the rise in Indonesia.

Presenter: Stephanie March
Speakers: King Oeui, gay and lesbian rights group Arus Pelangi; Usman Hamid, KONTRAS human rights group; Dr Syafii Anwar, International Centre for Islam and Pluralism.
Listen: Windows Media

MARCH: Police decided last week to not issue a permit for the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex Association’s regional conference. The security forces were worried they would not be able to provide adequate protection for the ILGA conference participants, fearing religious groups in the majority-muslim country would lash out on the basis that homosexuality is against Islamic teachings. The conference was cancelled by the organisers, but a number of foreign participants remained in a hotel in Surabaya over the weekend waiting for flights out of the country. On Saturday members of several hardline Islamic groups allegedly descended on the hotel harassing participants.

OEUI: They came with such a force. And they actually immediately invaded the lobby of the hotel and they demanded that we disband and that we immediately leave the hotel.

Equality California Releases Report on “Moving Marriage Forward”

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

Our nation is engaged in a crucial conversation about why marriage matters. More than 100 million Americans now live in jurisdictions that provide the freedom to marry or some other measure of recognition for same-sex couples and their loved ones. That’s up from virtually zero just a decade ago. Public support for the freedom to marry continues to grow, with polls now consistently showing majority support among parts of the public and in several states, and near majority support nationwide.

Even though momentum is on the side of the freedom to marry, we know there is still much work to do. Only five states and the District of Columbia have ended exclusion from marriage. Losses at the ballot in California and Maine, however temporary, as well as the ongoing national debate, make it clear that many people are still wrestling with the idea of fairness for all families.

About 20 to 40 percent of people nationwide continue to waver in their position on marriage. These friends and neighbors – even family members – are good and fair people. They have deeply held beliefs, as well as some internal conflicts and real uncertainties, about gay people and marriage. Answering the sincere questions of this group of people – helping them push past discomfort and resolve their conflicts – is the key to meeting Freedom to Marry’s goal of securing majority support for marriage. How can we each personally and most effectively have the conversations that help more people rise to fairness?

Episcopal Bishops Hear Reports For and Against Marriage Equality

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

Two years ago The Episcopal Church House of Bishops asked a panel of eight theologians, four “conservative” and four “liberal,” to produce a study document addressing the issue of same-sex marriage. The Rev. Dr. Grant LeMarquand, Trinity’s Academic Dean, was one of the theologians on that committee. Their work is now done.

Along with Dr. Willis Jenkins of Yale, Grant went to the Spring 2010 meeting of the House of Bishops to present the work of the panel. Both Willis and Grant gave ten minute presentations summarizing the two positions, for and against same-sex marriage. The bishops then discussed among themselves in table groups following which there was an hour for the bishops to ask questions.

Perhaps the most interesting thing which happened during that question period was a short speech by Gene Robinson, Bishop of New Hampshire, who expressed dissatisfaction with both papers and stated that it was time to move beyond speaking simply of “GLBT” (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered) orientations: “there are so many other letters in the alphabet,” he said; “there are so many other sexualities to be explored.”

UK: Gay MP Enters Into Civil Partnership in Parliament

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

Europe Minister Chris Bryant became the first gay man MP to enter into a civil partnership in the Houses of Parliament yesterday. The Labour MP for Rhondda, a former Church of England clergyman, tied the knot with his partner Jared Cranney, a company secretary.

The ceremony took place in the Members’ Dining Room, overlooking the Thames, after the Speaker John Bercow gave his permission for it to go ahead.

In a statement released afterwards, the couple said they were ‘enormously grateful’ to Mr Bercow and Leader of the Commons Harriet Harman for making the ‘really special day’ possible. “We never thought this day would come – and never thought we’d have to worry about cakes and flowers and rings,” they said.

IA: Gay Marriage May Be a Factor in Fall Elections

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

With the Legislature moving toward adjournment, the year-long battle to overturn the Iowa Supreme Court decision establishing same-sex marriage is moving to a new venue – the campaign trail.

Party leaders insist the 2010 election will be about the economy, creating jobs and protecting Iowans’ priorities: education, health-care, safe communities.

The effort to overturn the April 3, 2009, decision legalizing same-sex marriage is unlikely to be the issue of the campaign, campaign operatives say, but it will be an issue that, in some races, may influence the outcome.

Gay Couple Could Win Crate & Barrel Wedding Contest

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

Gay Couple in Crate & Barrel Wedding ContestA gay couple have a chance of winning Crate & Barrel’s “Ultimate Wedding” contest and the $100,000 prize. Gregory Jones and Jonathan Howard are currently second in the voting with more than 11,000 votes. The Washington, D.C., couple were among the first in the District of Columbia to apply for a marriage license this month.

“We knew that we were right for each other from the start,” Howard said. “We knew that we would always be by each other’s side.” But in August 2008, crisis struck the couple when Howard was the victim of a bias-motivated crime.

“We were walking home and a group of four guys pulled up to us in a car,” Howard told DC Agenda. “I turned around to see what the commotion was and the last thing I remember is hearing, ‘Die, fa**ot, die,’ as they stomped my head into the pavement.”

Vote for Gregory & Jonathan

RI: Marriage Equality Rhode Island Releases New Video Featuring Six Couples

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

Five gay and lesbian Rhode Island couples open up in front of the camera for a new video from Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) and Marriage Equality Rhode Island (MERI).

“These couples exemplify the best of marriage: love and commitment, in sickness and in health, for better and for worse,” said Kathy Kushnir, executive director of MERI. “After hearing their stories, you just can’t deny that they understand marriage, and deserve marriage equality.”

The six-minute film was made as a campaign tool, and will be distributed to R.I. legislators. It has been posted on both GLAD and MERI’s Web sites (www.glad.org; www.marriageequalityri.org) and on YouTube.

AZ: Proposed Bill Would Reserve Adoption for Married Couples, Exclude Lesbians & Gays

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

Arizona is considering a bill of a different sort; one that would block gays from the adoption process. Under the proposal, gays and singles would be exempt from the adoption process; married couples alone would be considered. The bill, written by Republican State Representative Warde Nichols, seems to have little political support. However, it indicates that the gay marriage debate is alive and far from over.

Recent polls indicate voters’ main concern is the economy; however, gay marriage remains in the spotlight. Governor David Paterson, a pro-marriage advocate, recently opted out of the New York gubernatorial race, eliciting an outcry from the gay community.

Harold Ford Jr. who is considering a run for the New York Senate Seat, found himself mired in controversy over his stance on gay marriage the same day. Meg Whitman, a gubernatorial candidate in California and the most prominent voice in a state embroiled in the gay marriage debate. Whitman, whose support from voters seems steady, recently came out in support of civil unions, but not marriage – a common position for candidates nowadays.
