MD: Equality Leaders Urge Patience Until Time is Right for Gay Marriage Bill

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

When Attorney General Douglas Gansler issued his February opinion recognizing same-sex marriages from out of state, it made Maryland the next state to watch on gay marriage. The prediction seems logical in a state dominated by Democratic voters and legislators, many of them liberal-leaning. But far from calling a victory, advocates are counting on a counterintuitive strategy: Stalling.

That’s because a referendum is likely to follow passage of any new marriage law, and voters have not favored gay marriage in states where a popular vote was held. Advocates here want to put off that possibility until public opinion moves more in their favor.

In more than a decade of bills on same-sex marriage, none have passed the General Assembly. And as Maryland follows the trajectory of states that have legalized gay marriage, advocates may not want a vote anytime soon.

Separate Rooms for Gay Marines?

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

The Marine Corps’ top officer said he would not force straight Marines to share rooms with gay service members if Congress repeals the “don’t ask, don’t tell” law and allows gay men and lesbians to serve openly in the armed forces.

Gen. James T. Conway, the commandant of the Marine Corps, told the Web site military.com in an interview published Friday that an “overwhelming” number of Marines would be opposed to bunking with someone of a different sexual orientation. As a result, he said, the Corps might have to ditch its double-bed rooms and offer single rooms to everyone.

“We want to continue [two-person rooms], but I would not ask our Marines to live with someone who is homosexual if we can possibly avoid it,” Conway told the Web site. The Marine Corps is the only branch of the armed services that requires its unmarried members to share rooms, a policy meant to foster unit cohesion.

India: Parental Pressure Breaks Up Newly Married Gay Couple

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

Just two days after the first such public marriage in Manipur, a gay couple have agreed mutually to part ways following stiff resistance from their parents, police said today.

Parents of 26-year-old Soibam Sandip and 28-year-old Nikhil Hidangmayum had filed a complaint with Shingjamei police station in Imphal West district against the wedding held in Christian-style on Wednesday. The officer-in-charge of the police station counselled the gay couple, following which they agreed for a divorce, they said.

According to the parents, the marriage was conducted without their permission, although invitation cards were sent out to their friends about a week earlier. Sandip works in a beauty parlour run by Nikhil.

Sarah Silverman on Marriage: Like Joining a Racist Country Club (Punchline)

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Celebrity marriages come and go, but we know of at least one high-profile personality who won’t be tying the knot any sooner than she’ll be tying her tongue: Sarah Silverman. In a recent interview with Playboy, the world’s best news source for the bachelor/bachelorette lifestyle, Silverman professed a general disdain for the institution of marriage, comparing it to her vegetarianism.

“I’m a vegetarian, but I don’t have a problem if you want a hamburger,” she said. “Marriage to me is like eating meat. I think it’s gross and [bleep]ing crazy.” She also went on to criticize heterosexual couples who choose to get married, citing the mostly-federal ban on marriage between gay and lesbian couples as a primary reason to withhold participation.

Because gays and lesbians can’t get married in most states, Silverman said, “If you’re getting married today, it’s the equivalent of joining a country club that doesn’t allow blacks or Jews.”

Grindr a Tool for Social Justice?

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Grindr FounderDespite the freakout, no, Grindr has not been pulled from Apple’s App Store. In fact, today is Grindr’s first birthday, and we’re celebrating a year of guys cruising their neighborhoods from the comfort of their iPhones by chatting with founder Joel Simkhai, who went from selling magazine subscriptions to creating the gay’s must-have app. (Grindr, meanwhile, is celebrating by launching its new BlackBerry app).

QUEERTY: Did you ever imagine Grindr would grow so fast, so quickly? What’s been the key to its rapid expansion? How did this go viral?

Joel Simkhai: I created Grindr with the hope it would it would be well received and used internationally but I did not expect the personal impact it would have on the lives of so many other guys. Guys approach me continually to say ‘thank you’ and they tell me an amazing success story about how they met some great guys because of Grindr. Many have told me that it has changed their lives in a great way. They have a new ability to connect and interact with the community around them. The unbelievable outpouring of gratitude and appreciation from our users has been immeasurably touching.

Do you know anyone that’s gotten married after meeting on Grindr?

I have not been invited to a wedding…yet. I look forward to the chance to mobilize the Grindr community to help repeal Prop 8 here in California and help enact laws allowing for gay marriage worldwide.

MD: State Legislature Considers Repeal of Sodomy Laws (Southern Maryland

Friday, March 26th, 2010

One of these romantic spring nights, you and your spouse, in the heat of passion, might be committing a felony – an uncomfortable legal position that the sponsor of a bill heard Thursday is trying to correct. Maryland’s criminal code (27§553) includes two sections on sodomy and “unnatural or perverted sex practices,” both of which can carry a 10-year prison sentence.

The laws are not typically enforced in cases of private contact between consenting adults. But Delegate Frank M. Conaway Jr., D-Baltimore, wants to change the code’s language to specifically protect consensual sex acts between adults.

A giggling House Judiciary Committee heard testimony Thursday on the bill. “It’s a very touchy subject,” Conaway said.

Nigeria: New Anglican Primate: Gays Not Welcome in Transformation Effort

Friday, March 26th, 2010

New Primate of the Anglican Church, Archbishop Nicholas Okoh, has restated the position of the Anglican Communion in Nigeria against the practice of gay marriage in the church. This followed a call by Acting President Goodluck Jonathan on religious leaders in the country to collaborate with the Federal Government in transforming the country.

Jonathan was the special guest at the formal handing over of the reign of office to Archbishop Okoh by outgoing Archbishop Peter Akinola, on Thursday at the Cathedral of the Advent Church in Abuja. In his short speech, the Acting President called on the church to shun corruption and discourage social vices. According Jonathan, “As a nation, we are challenged. Over the periods, we have failed to do what we should have done and we have done those things we should not have done. We know our problems. We want religious leaders to join us in solving the problems. We promise to do our best and we are totally committed to transforming this country.”

Okoh, who is also the chairman of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission, while delivering the sermon of the day, said, “We do not approve of a homosexual lifestyle and same-sex marriages. Some want us to see it as a normal alternative lifestyle to marriage between male and female. We are saying we are sorry, we cannot accept this in the church.”

US: Would End of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Mean Gay Partner Benefits Too?

Friday, March 26th, 2010

If gay service members are allowed to serve openly, the military will face another tough question: Should gay partners be entitled to military benefits? Momentum appears to be building for ending the ban on gays in the military. New rules ordered Thursday by Defense Secretary Robert Gates make it harder to discharge men and women under the policy known as “don’t ask, don’t tell.” His decision is intended as a stopgap measure as Congress weighs whether to go along with President Barack Obama’s request to repeal the law.

Since the draft ended in 1973, spousal benefits have increasingly been used as an incentive to recruit and retain an effective force. Today, more than half of all troops sport a wedding ring.

Benefits for married service members include college tuition for a spouse and the right of a spouse to be at a wounded service member’s bedside. Spouses also have access to military health care and commissaries worldwide, and married service members receive better housing and even extra pay when they go to war.
