LA: Senate Kills Gay Adoption Bill

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

The Louisiana Senate Judiciary Committee killed a bill yesterday similar to the one proposed in the House by Rep. Juan Lafonta, which I posted about last week, that would have allowed gay parents to adopt children together, the AP reports:

Senators on the Judiciary A Committee voted 3-1 against the bill, siding with opponents from Catholic, Baptist and other church groups who argued the adoptions would encourage immoral behavior and violate the spirit of a voter-approved constitutional ban on gay marriage.

“What these children will learn from structures which are not moral or spiritual will only hurt them,” said Willie Wooten, a minister and founder of Gideon Christian Fellowship in New Orleans.

Malta: Party Selects First Openly Gay MP

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

The Nationalist Party’s executive committee yesterday elected the first openly gay MP to Parliament to replace Michael Frendo, who was appointed Speaker to replace Louis Galea, who in turn took up a post with the European Court of Auditors.

Karl Gouder, 31, from St Julian’s, told MaltaToday he was looking forward to the challenge of being the youngest MP on the government side, whilst also thanking his family and friends who assisted him in his campaign for the 2008 general election.

Asked what would his stance be with regards to gay rights and co-habitation, Gouder said he would adopt a ‘wait and see’ stance for the time being.

CA: Prop 8 Judge Issues Ultimatum to No on 8 Groups

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

U.S. District Court Judge Vaughn Walker has issued a warning to Equality California and the ACLU that they have until tomorrow to hand over the documents that he ordered them to so that the pro-Prop 8 groups could go through them. If they failed to do so, they would be fined a total of $2,000 per citation.

Neither Equality California nor the ACLU are, in fact, party to the lawsuit which makes the order for them to spend the $20,000 necessary to reproduce the documents rather baffling. This may be a stalling tactic on part of the “Yes on 8″ coalition which fear that this case could overturn not only Prop 8, but make same-sex marriage legal across the country.

This lawsuit, Perry v. Schwarzenegger, also has national implications as many national anti-LGBT groups fight to keep a gay man or lesbian from sitting on the Supreme Court.

“Mormon Proposition” Movie Trailer Released

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

I’m fascinated by the growing trend of documentaries that take a look at recent history. I got a chance to see Alex Gibney’s Casino Jack a few days ago, finally watched Outrage last week, and in checking out the trailer for 8: The Mormon Proposition, I have to say that I’m loving the forced-transparency that is coming with our media-overloaded lives. Of course, there’s a slant to all of these documentaries, but they are Zinn-like in their quality of telling a different side to the story.

The Mormon Proposition takes a look at the infusion of money from the Mormon Church in Utah during the push to get Prop 8, a proposition which strictly defined marriage, passed and added on to the California Constitution. This, of course, came as a direct response to gay marriage being legalized in the state.

TX: Possible Ramifications of Same Sex Divorce Cases

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Texas is doing it again. We’re trying some serious contortions to make sure gays and lesbians can’t share in the same rights as heterosexuals, and this time the whole danged opera could blow up in our faces.

Last Wednesday, an appeals court in Dallas was to hear two cases which had already been decided in lower courts in this state. These cases were divorces, one involving two gay men and the other involving two lesbians. Both marriages had been performed in Massachusetts after that state legalized gay marriage in 2004, and both couples filed for divorce in Texas.

State Attorney General Greg Abbott filed the appeals on the grounds that same-sex unions are illegal in Texas. In a curious bit of irony it appears that Abbott has deemed it necessary to protect the mechanism of divorce as a way to guarantee the sanctity of marriage.

HI: Advocates Push for Civil Unions Bill Vote

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Gay rights activists are trying to give state lawmakers political cover by showing that prominent people in the community support civil unions. Activists are circulating a photo booklet of hundreds of people who back civil unions – from former Gov. Ben Cayetano to former Miss Universe Brook Lee – to demonstrate mainstream desire for equal rights.

The photo booklet, along with newspaper advertisements and a separate collection of portraits of same-sex couples and their families, is part of a strategy to help convince lawmakers in the state House to force a vote on civil unions before the state Legislature adjourns on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Bishop Larry Silva, of the Roman Catholic Church in Hawai’i, sent lawmakers a message yesterday thanking them for not passing civil unions this session.

DC: Appalling Treatment of Transgender Activist by DC Police, Guards

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Dear President Barack Obama, My name is Autumn Sandeen, I’m a retired, disabled Fire Controlman, First Class Petty Officer; I retired in 2000 from the U.S. Navy after twenty years of service. You may know my name already, as I was one of the six military veterans who handcuffed ourselves to the White House fence on Tuesday, April 20th, 2010, to put pressure on you to include the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell in your submission of the Defense Authorization Budget. I am writing today to bring to your attention the discriminatory behavior I was subjected to as a transgender woman by your federal law enforcement officers.

I am a strong, confident transgender woman. I served proudly as a Persian Gulf War Veteran onboard the USS Gary (FFG-51) as a Close-In Weapons System technician during that war. I was awarded both a Navy Achievement Medal and a Gold Star in lieu of a second award for my service at Naval Station Long Beach’s Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity. I served onboard the USS Coronado when the ship was awarded a Unit Commendation. I’m also a disabled veteran; my VA Disability Rating is 100%, and is a service-connected disability. When I handcuffed myself to the White House fence, I wasn’t an impersonator wearing a costume; I was proudly wearing an appropriate uniform for my gender identity.

Sir, I engaged in civil obedience to pressure you because you told us we should.

Turkey: Temporary Haven for Iranian Gays Fleeing Iran

Monday, April 26th, 2010

The salmon-colored building has seen better days. Paint peels from the moldy facades. Pieces of cardboard, newspaper and plastic cover the many missing windows – not worth replacing, because the neighborhood kids, who know this as “the gay building,” will just smash them again.

The two-story building in Kayseri’s Fez Kichak neighborhood has become an informal halfway-house for Iranian homosexuals fleeing torment in their homeland and hoping to make it to the West. Homosexuality is punishable by death in Iran, and human rights groups estimate some 4,000 gays have been executed since the Islamic revolution in 1979.

The atmosphere has only gotten more tense since the arrival in power five years ago of hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who famously proclaimed in a 2007 speech at Columbia University that there are no homosexuals in his country. An official memo sent to government departments last year called on employees to either marry or resign – a step seen as aimed at seeking to weed out homosexuals.
