HI: Anti-Gay Congressman Wins Election in Hawaii After Democrats Squabble

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

Republican Honolulu council member Charles Djou, who won Saturday’s special congressional election in Hawaii, was the least gay-friendly of the three leading candidates looking to fill the seat vacated by Democratic Neil Abercrombie, who left Congress to run for governor.

In fact, Djou was the only candidate to come out against the state’s civil unions bill, which is currently awaiting a decision from Governor Linda Lingle. He issued a statement saying that one of his Democratic rivals, state senate president Colleen Hanabusa, had “blatantly ignored the will” of Hawaii residents by supporting civil unions.

“Hawaii voters have spoken very clearly in support of traditional marriage,” he added, referring to a 1998 constitutional amendment that allowed legislators to ban marriage equality, which they did. Djou also supports the antigay Defense of Marriage Act, the Associated Press reports.

CA: EQCA Starts Marriage Equality Conversations Across the State

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

With rallies, protests, dedications, and ceremonies across the state, it was hard to miss California’s inaugural celebration of Harvey Milk’s birthday. And if you live in a conservative-voting neighborhood, Equality California may have even brought Harvey Milk Day right to your door.

Since the passage of Proposition 8 in 2008, EQCA has significantly beefed up its organizing for marriage equality by hiring a Marriage Director, opening field offices in conservative strongholds, holding over 200 canvassing events in the last year, and developing a roadmap to overturn Prop 8 at the ballot box in 2012.

Victory in 2012 is far from assured. The most current polling research predicts a campaign almost as closely contested as 2008’s Prop 8.

IA: Governor Culver: Iowans Accept Marriage Equality Ruling

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

The gay-marriage issue that Republicans see as a hot button to push in 2010 races isn’t so controversial, Iowa Gov. Chet Culver contended in his Sioux City stop this week as part of a five-day swing through the state to officially launch his re-election campaign.

Democrat Culver cited a lot of projects and endeavors from his three-plus years as governor, including raising the minimum wage, making preschool more accessible and helping bring the state back from the 2008 floods in eastern Iowa. Culver didn’t reference the topic of same-sex marriage arriving in the state in April 2009 after an Iowa Supreme Court ruling, so I asked him.

The three Republicans seeking the party nomination to take on Culver in November have varying ways they’d like to push aside the gay marriage ruling. Sioux City management consultant Bob Vander Plaats says he’ll issue an executive order to overturn the ruling, State Rep. Rod Roberts of Carroll says he’ll veto bills that come down the pike before the (now Democratic-controlled) Legislature provides for a referendum for Iowans to vote on a constitutional amendment to return to traditional marriage and Terry Branstad said he wants that referendum to happen too.

Pelosi: Don’t Ask Don’t Tell “a Memory Come Christmas”

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

Tonight at Equality California’s kickoff event for Harvey Milk Weekend at San Francisco’s Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Community Center, to celebrate the eightieth birthday of the first LGBT American to have a state-commemorated day, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi assured the assembled A-list LGBT crowd:

“Don’t-Ask-Don’t-Tell, I feel quite certain, will be a memory come Christmas.”

The Speaker also highlighted the hard work this Congress will do to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, pass a gender-expression-inclusive iENDA (inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act), and enact LGBT-friendly family immigration law, but it was on Don’t-Ask-Don’t-Tell that she was most specific. House Armed Services Committee Chairman Ike Skelton, are you listening?

CA: Gay Community Celebrates First Harvey Milk Day on Icon’s 80th Birthday

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

Activists in California celebrated Harvey Milk Day knocking on doors to build support for gay marriage. Saturday was the inaugural day honoring the slain gay rights leader. Sharon Osbourne and daughter Kelly opened their Hidden Hills home to host a fundraiser sponsored by the state’s largest gay rights advocate, Equality California.

On Friday, speaking to a crowd at San Francisco’s LGBT Community Center in the Castro District, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, said Harvey Milk helped open doors for the gay community.

“We’ll come right back to Harvey Milk when he said his victory signaled a green light to all who were disenfranchised,” Pelosi said. “A green light to move forward and that the doors are open to everyone.” California lawmakers have designated May 22 – Milk’s birthday – as Harvey Milk Day. Milk would have turned 80 this year.

NY: Cuomo Enters Governors Race, Favors Marriage Equality Push

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

Same sex marriage advocates have been fighting to advance marriage equality in New York State after the debacle in the state’s senate last year by reaching out to the public, fielding senate candidates and by raising money.

Now comes a burst of fresh energy from Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Cuomo who in his battle cry online campaign kick-off announcement chose marriage equality as one of the select issues of his candidacy bringing hope to civil rights proponents across the state and nationally.

In the announcement he decries the delinquency of Albany vowing to straighten out the mess that has been years in the making and that is really the crux of the problem because but for the floundering in the senate marriage equality would be the law today in the state.

CA: NOM Launching Robocalls Against Tom Campbell Over Gay Marriage Support

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

The National Organization for Marriage, which opposes gay marriage, said Friday it is launching robocalls against former Rep. Tom Campbell in the Republican U.S. Senate primary. The New Jersey-based group previously aired an independent television ad against Campbell attacking him for his fiscal policies and stance on gay marriage. Campbell supports gay marriage and opposed the 2008 constitutional amendment, Proposition 8, which recognized marriage in California only between a man and a woman.

NOM says it intends to reach 609,000 likely GOP primary voters. “The explicit message of this campaign is: don’t vote for Tom Campbell, because he supports gay marriage as well as raising taxes,” Brian Brown, the organization’s president, said in a statement.

Campbell has said he does not believe in higher taxes, but he would not rule them out entirely. As a gubernatorial candidate last year, he proposed a one-year, 32-cent per gallon tax hike to help balance the budget. He has declined to sign no-new-tax pledges because he says there may be emergency situations in which the federal government would need new tax revenue.
