US: NOM Plans Summer Hate Tour in 23 Cities

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

NOM Summer TourThe National Organization for Marriage is launching a 23-city bus tour to bring their message of bigotry and civil inequality throughout the country:

“Over 33 days, we’ll travel more than 6000 miles, holding rallies in 23 cities from Maine to Minnesota to Atlanta and Tampa before heading back to Washington, DC for the tour finale on August 15th. Many of the states we’ll be visiting are key battlegrounds in this critical debate, as we work to organize grassroots support for marriage as the union of a husband and wife at both the state federal levels, building support for state marriage amendments and opposing the repeal of DOMA.

Please visit www.marriagetour2010.com for the latest tour information, including the bus schedule, a chance to register for email alerts from the tour, and video footage of each tour stop. We need your help to make this summer’s tour a success!

CA: Log Cabin Sues Government Over Don’t Ask Don’t Tell

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

A district court judge in California has agreed to hear the Log Cabin Republican’s challenge to DADT.

Lawyer Dan Woods says U.S. District Court Judge Virginia A. Phillips in Riverside, Calif. agreed Monday to send the case to trial July 13. Woods is representing the Log Cabin Republicans, a group rights group. He says the group hopes to end the 1993 policy by having it declared unconstitutional. If the group wins, Woods says it could set a precedent for the entire nation. The Obama administration supports the drive to repeal the ban but faces a tough road ahead in the full Senate, where Republicans are likely to filibuster it.

The big question now is how vigorously the Obama administration will defend itself against the suit.

NY: Legislature Passes Funeral Leave Bill for Gay/Lesbian Couples

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

New York employers will soon be required to extend funeral and bereavement leave to same-sex couples.

A bill is headed to Governor Paterson’s desk that would prohibit discrimination by employers who provide such leave to other workers. The bill would apply to couples in a long-term relationship that’s financially and emotionally interdependent.

US: Supreme Court Ruling May Bode Well for Prop 8 Challenge

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

In a recent decision, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the view that gays and lesbians are an identifiable class in the eyes of the law – a characterization that anti-gay-marriage forces have vigorously fought and that attorneys challenging California’s Proposition 8 see as a crucial element of their case.

In a Tuesday letter to U.S. district judge Vaughn R. Walker, Theodore J. Boutrous, who argued the high-profile case Perry v. Schwarzenegger alongside lead attorneys Ted Olson and David Boies, wrote that “sexual orientation is not merely behavioral,” and that, as the Supreme Court found Monday in Christian Legal Society v. Martinez, “there is no distinction between gay and lesbian individuals and their conduct.”

In that case Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote for the majority in a 5-4 split that the court would “not distinguish between status and conduct” in regards to gays and lesbians, citing Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s view in the landmark 2003 case Lawrence v. Texas, which struck down sodomy laws. (For more information on the Christian Legal Society decision, click here for an analysis by Christopher F. Stoll and Shannon Price Minter of the National Center for Lesbian Rights).

Australia: New PM Gillard Rules Out Gay Marriage

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Julia GillardOther local gay media have tried and failed to get an interview with Australia’s new Prime Minister on the gay marriage issue – but it took a quick-thinking young Same Samer to get results. “This morning 2dayFM was taking calls to ask Julia Gillard a question, I took the opportunity to call through (took a few attempts but I got through) and my question was ‘what is her view on same sex marriage, and would she consider legalising it?’” typed 20-year-old Tatsuya on our Forum today.

“This is the frank answer, we’d got very clear Labor party policy on this and it won’t be changing – that we believe the marriage act is appropriate in its current form, that it’s recognising that marriage is between a man and a woman, but we have as a government taken steps to equalise treatment for gay couples, in the things that government does in social security benefits and the like.”

Pressed for her personal views on the issue by the show’s co-host Jackie O, Gillard stood firm. “Look, that is my view, I think that’s where we’re at as a community now, and I think it’s appropriate that for these very sensitive issues that we’re reflecting community views.”

Argentina: Senate Denies Church Request for Gay Marriage Ballot Box Vote

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Members of the Argentine Senate have rejected a call by the Roman Catholic Church to put a gay marriage bill up for a vote, La Nacion reported.

Church officials had asked senators to move the debate on gay marriage from the Senate to the public square. The bill was approved in May by Argentina’s lower house, the Chamber of Deputies (la Camara de Diputados) and is being reviewed in the Senate General Law Committee chaired by Senator Liliana Negre de Alonso, who has said that she disagrees with giving gay and lesbian couples the right to marry.

Negre de Alonso’s committee began a four-city hearing tour on June 14 that wrapped up Monday in Mendoza.

NH: GOP Candidate Asks “What Next – Men and Sheep?”

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Republican congressional candidate Bob Giuda, of Warren, raised some eyebrows in Nashua on Monday when he spoke to a group of students at Rivier College and compared same-sex marriage to bestiality, according to reports at WMUR.com.

Giuda had finished speaking at Rivier when a small group asked him about his position on gay rights, WMUR said, and he responded in opposition to same-sex marriage because he believes marriage should only be between a man and a woman.

According to WMUR, Giuda reportedly said, “What’s going to happen next? Men and sheep? Women and dogs?”

WI: State Supreme Court Upholds Gay Marriage Ban Unanimously

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

The Wisconsin Supreme Court has upheld Wisconsin’s ban on gay marriage and civil unions. In a 7-0 vote Wednesday morning, the court decided a 2006 constitutional amendment was properly put to voters.

A lawsuit claimed the amendment violated a rule that limits referendums to a single subject. The 2006 ballot asked voters two questions: whether to limit marriage to a man and a woman, and whether to outlaw any similar legal status for unmarried individuals.

The lawsuit, filed by voters opposed to the amendment, argued gay marriage and civil unions are two different subjects. Justice Michael Gableman said both “carry out the same general purpose of preserving the legal status of marriage in Wisconsin as between only one man and one woman.”
