Australian Marriage Equality Requests Meeting With New Prime Minister

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

Rights advocates have welcomed Australia’s first female Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, who was appointed to the country’s top job after Kevin Rudd stood down on the anniversary of the first ever gay and lesbian Mardi Gras parade in Sydney – June 24.

Australian Marriage Equality (AME) was the first group to move on Gillard’s appointment requesting a meeting with her to discuss “ways forward” on same sex marriage.

“We are hopeful Julia Gillard has an open mind on marriage equality. Unlike, Kevin Rudd, she is not known for putting conservative religion prejudices ahead of legal equality and fundamental human rights,” AME national convenor Alex Greenwich said.

CA: Prop 8 Case May Take Years to Resolve

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

Just hours after Judge Vaughn R. Walker banged the final gavel in the trial of Proposition 8 – California’s same-sex marriage ban – the two top lawyers challenging the law, David Boies and Theodore Olson, were holding court again: this time at a small private dinner with donors in San Francisco.

The meal, with a handful of people who have given money to the group challenging the ban, could well be seen as the opening maneuver in the second act of the saga of Proposition 8, which both sides expect to wind its way up the federal judicial food chain, most likely all the way to the Supreme Court.

“We would immediately appeal,” Andrew Pugno, a lawyer for the proponents of Proposition 8, said when asked if his side were to lose in Judge Walker’s court. The plaintiffs agree.

Costa Rica: Gay Marriage Put on the Ballot

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

Same sex marriage is still not legal in Costa Rica; a referendum is about to decide whether a new law will pass permitted the gay community to get married. This decision involves various gay groups, the Catholic Church, The Supreme Court and civil lawyers.

Why a Referendum to decide upon the fate of such a delicate issue like same sex civil union is questionable, when Costa Rica is so proud of being a democratic Country? The new President of Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla, is strongly opposed to same sex marriage and abortion rights, where is this democracy?

The new president was elected, like many before her, by giving a bag log of promises that will never concretizes. Now the gay community is about to be the first one to pay.

ID: GOP Platform Would Exclude Transgender People From Marriage

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

Idaho doesn’t recognize gay or lesbian marriage, but some Republicans want the state to go a step further. A panel of GOP delegates at the state party’s convention passed a measure Friday to define marriage as a bond between a “naturally born” man and woman, effectively barring transgenders.

Bannock County delegate Ralph Lilling says his amendment to the state party’s platform will help further protect the traditional family unit. But Donna Montgomery, a delegate from Kootenai County, argued that the additional language was unnecessary because people from Idaho understand man is a man and a woman is a woman.

The measure still has to go before the full convention for approval.

China: Gay, Lesbian Couples Pair Off to Satisfy Parents, Society

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

They had what they thought was the perfect solution, but it turned out that the men are just too picky. They think that Yu Xiaofei, with her cropped black hair and dark-rimmed glasses, looks too much like a tomboy, and they think that Jiang Yifei’s distaste for children is suspicious.

So what are these young Chinese women to do? They’re 24, out of college, employed, living at home – and they’re in love with each other and desperate to find a way to stay together. “The most important thing is that we cannot hurt out parents,” Yu said. “They put a lot on us.”

That means finding two men in a similar predicament. Their plan is simple. Yu and Jiang will find a gay male couple, arrange a living situation and lay down some ground rules. Then, they’ll pair off with the men and get married, just as their parents expect them to do.

Russia Detains Gay Rights Activists After Unsanctioned Rally

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

Russian police on Saturday detained several gay rights activists in a public courtyard within St. Petersburg’s noted State Hermitage Museum, apparently for holding an unsanctioned rally.

Two dozens activists unfurled banners and chanted “Homophobia the shame of the country” and “Marriage rights without compromises” before police moved in and seizing six people, who offered little resistance.

The rally was not announced in advance, but media were tipped off. Gay rights in Russia are poorly observed, with police often violently dispersing demonstrators and allowing attacks on them to go unpunished.

Argentina: 4,000 Rally in Favor of Gay Marriage Bill

Friday, June 25th, 2010

More than 4,000 people rallied Thursday in Cordoba to urge the Argentine Senate to approve a gay marriage bill, various media outlets reported.

Demonstrators marched on the Plaza de la Intendencia, where they held banners, chanted slogans and listened to speeches in favor of making Argentina the first Latin American country to legalize marriage between two members of the same sex.

The bill was approved in May by Argentina’s lower house, the Chamber of Deputies (la Camara de Diputados). The Senate General Law Committee reviewing the bill has taken its gay marriage debate on the road, with stops planned for the cities of Salta, Tucuman, San Juan and Mendoza. The four-city tour runs from June 14-28. The full Senate is scheduled to take up the bill on July 14, a Wednesday, where the measure faces an uncertain future.

US: New Study Shows Link Between Gay Marriage Bans, Lack of Health Insurance

Friday, June 25th, 2010

A new study co-authored by Lambda Legal and the UCLA School of Public Health finds a close correlation between state and federal marriage discrimination against same-sex couples and disparities in health coverage between married heterosexuals and partnered gay men and lesbians.

The study, released today in the online edition of the leading journal Health Affairs, found that partnered lesbians are only 28 percent as likely as married heterosexual couples to receive healthcare coverage for a partner through an employer. Gay men are 42 percent as likely.

The study also found that these disparities are not remedied by other insurance options. Instead, lesbians and gay men are twice as likely as their straight coworkers to have uninsured life partners, which puts strains on personal health, family finances and public services. Same-sex couples – even if legally married or in a registered domestic partnership – often face discriminatory barriers to coverage within employers’ plans, and when they can participate, the federal and most state governments tax those benefits as earned income.

Malta: Muslims, Catholics Join to Bar Gays From Marriage

Friday, June 25th, 2010

The views on marriage and sexuality expressed by the Catholic and Muslim leaders in Malta during a conference yesterday suggested a ‘marriage of convenience’ between the country’s two largest religious denominations to propagate inherently flawed beliefs, the Malta Humanist Association and the Malta Gay Rights Movement said in a joint statement.

The MHA and the MGRM said they were all in favour of inter-cultural dialogue, but from a humanist perspective, it was alarming that such influential institutions should use their combined strength to prevent couples of the same gender from marrying, simply because of an ancient myth about a man, a woman and a talking snake.

They said that quotes attributed to Arbishop Paul Cremona and Ammar Hreba, the head of the Islamic Centres and Propagation Bureau, suggested that the local Catholic and Muslim community leaders inclined towards a literal interpretation of the creation myth from their respective scriptures.
