UK: Gay Activist Meets With Equalities Minister on Marriage Equality

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Gay rights legend Peter Tatchell has met with Equalities Minister Lynne Featherstone MP to urge the government to review its ban on gay marriage.

He and other queer campaigners convened with Featherstone yesterday at the House of Commons to discuss the possibility of granting civil partnerships a religious content.

“The coalition government should undertake a public consultation to determine whether the ban on gay marriage ought to be lifted,” Tatchell argued.

Canada: Five Years After Marriage Equality, Canada’s Sky Has Not Fallen

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

This month marks the fifth anniversary of the legalization of same-sex marriage in Canada. In that time the sky has not fallen in on traditional, opposite-sex marriage. Or perhaps the more accurate thing to say is that same-sex marriage has not caused the sky to fall in on traditional marriage any faster than it was already falling before July 2005 when Parliament made same-sex marriage legal. Same-sex marriage has not sped up the deterioration of traditional marriage.

I disappointed many social-conservative readers half a decade ago when I wrote in favour of same-sex marriage, but at the same time won few friends among advocates of Same-sex marriage. It’s not so much that I am in favour of Same-sex marriage as I don’t see the harm in letting gays and lesbians marry. Heterosexuals have already hollowed out the institution of marriage so thoroughly that it no longer means what it once did and I see no great interest among heterosexuals in tightening up opposite-sex marriage.

Let me back up a step: Marriage can still mean a great deal, but only if the couple in the relationship make it meaningful to themselves. Governments lost interest in preserving the original significance of the institution decades ago.

Is NOM Tour An Excuse to Draw Counter-Protesters, Show How Angry The Gays Are?

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) has embarked on a 23 state Summer For Marriage bus tour, taking its traditional marriage, anti-gay message on the road to spread the word of what a big, bad threat gay marriage is to society. Unfortunately, society seems to be less than enthused given that supporters at these rallies have been, well, fairly thin on the ground, with gay rights advocates outnumbering NOM supporters 3-1 or more. But could this be just what NOM wants? Conspiracy theorists, here’s one for you.

The Summer for Marriage tour has been perceived as going so badly for NOM, in fact, that some have started to suspect that there may be an ulterior motive behind it.

Fred Sainz, the Human Rights Campaign’s (HRC) vice president of communications, alleges in an article on the HRC’s website that NOM is actually using the tour to draw out gay rights protesters, hoping therein to use confrontations that may or may not have occurred at the events so that they can add to their alleged nationwide plan to evade public disclosure laws and keep hidden their political activities.

Portugal: Foreign Marriages Now Recognized Too; 20 Gay/Lesbian Couples Have Married

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Only about 20 gay or lesbian couples have gotten married in Portugal since it became possible on 7 June. Another 30 weddings are scheduled before the end of the year. Portugal has about 10.6 million residents.

Meanwhile, two administrative changes have been made to resolve snafus encountered by same-sex couples.

People who married in other countries before the Portuguese law took effect now will have their foreign marriages recognised.

IN: NOM Rally Attendee Wants to Lynch the Gays

Monday, July 26th, 2010

NOM Rally Sign in IndianaThe National Organization for Marriage’s “One Man, One Woman” bus tour hit Indianapolis today and the LGBT community came out to greet them. Since we’re hospitable Hoosiers, of course, our welcome wagon outnumbered the small dog and pony show put on by NOM and local religious right groups.

Over 250 LGBT and allied folks protested the rally, but only 40 fundies showed up. At least 10 of the anti-marriage equality crowd were NOM staff or local speakers; the rest of the group were older Caucasians and skewed slightly female.

One older attendee held this sign and the Courage Campaign, there to document the entire tour, got an interview with the man. It’s included after the jump with another photo of the guy with the sign.

Argentina: 57% Support New Gay Marriage Law

Monday, July 26th, 2010

An online survey has found that a majority of Argentinians approve of gay marriage. The survey was conducted by Argentina’s 110-year-old paper El Debate.

The paper asked: “A few hours ago and after prolonged discussion, Argentina became the first Latin American country that allows marriage between members of the same sex. Do you agree with this new law?” Fifty-seven percent of respondents to the poll said they agreed with the law, while 41 percent disagreed and the remainder said they had no opinion.

Argentina became the tenth country to legalize gay marriage last Wednesday when President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner signed the gay marriage law approved by lawmakers.

Canada: 61% of Canadians Now Approve of Gay Marriage

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Canadians are much cooler with same-sex relations than their U.K. and U.S. cousins, according to a new public opinion survey. The online survey by Angus Reid Public Opinion found 61% of Canadians want same-sex marriage to remain legal while 41% of Britons and 36% of Americans would legalize it in their countries.

More than half of all Americans surveyed (55%) want the U.S. Supreme Court to define marriage as being between a man and a woman.

Where support does exist for same-sex marriage, it is more likely to be found among members of the two youngest generations in all three countries. But younger Americans, those born between 1980 and 1995, are more conservative when it comes to homosexuality than Canadians and Britons who are the same age.

OR: Basic Rights Oregon Starts 3 Week Ad Campaign

Monday, July 26th, 2010

If you live in Oregon and oppose same-sex marriage, gay-rights supporters will be trying to change your mind – and ultimately reverse a state ban on gay marriage – with a three-week advertising campaign. Basic Rights Oregon, the state’s largest gay-rights group, last week began airing 30-second ads on various cable television stations covering Ashland, Cottage Grove, Florence, Eugene, Corvallis, Albany and Coos, Clatsop and Washington counties. The ads are expected to cost several hundred thousand dollars and reach about 300,000 people.

In addition, the group is mailing 50,000 brochures to households within those areas that explain why gay and lesbian couples want to marry.

“Our hope is to reach many more people with the message and continue to inspire those one-on-one conversations that we feel are critical to building understanding and support for the freedom to marry,” said Jeana Frazzini, executive director of Basic Rights Oregon.
