NY: Rosie Perez Appears in New Gay Marriage Ad

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Appearing in a new video urging New Yorkers to support the legalization of gay marriage, actress Rosie Perez targets anti-gay marriage senators. In the new video for Fight Back NY, Perez specifically targets New York State Senator Ruben Diaz Sr., the Senate’s most vocal opponent of gay marriage.

The political action committee is working to oust New York senators who voted against a gay marriage bill last year.

“I’m extremely disappointed with your position on this matter,” Perez says to Diaz. “With all due respect, sir, your stand represents a lack of justice and equality on this issue. Please take note: You are not speaking for the majority of New York Latinos.”

DC: Would GOP Win Put Anti Gay Mormon Republican in Position to Overturn Gay Marriage?

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

The Washington City Paper‘s new “The Sexist” blogger, Dave Weigel, has a profile out on Jason Chaffetz, the “proto-Tea Party” freshman Republican Congressman from Utah who is poised to head the Federal Workforce, Postal Service, and the District of Columbia Subcommittee of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

That’s actually sort of funny, because this guy doesn’t like DC! For example, part of his platform when he ran for office in 2008 was to work to keep the District from getting a vote in Congress. Oh, and he wants to stick DC into Maryland and overturn the legalization of gay marriage.

For people who don’t think a national legislature ought to be mucking around in the nitty-gritty of local government, Chaffetz actually has a fix. It just that his solution doesn’t happen to lie along the D.C. statehood/legal autonomy: In Chaffetz’s idea, most of what we now call Washington, D.C., could become Washington, Maryland.

IA: Judges Under Attack Take the High Road

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Marsha Ternus said Thursday that she and two other justices have no plans to launch a counter-campaign against gay rights opponents seeking to unseat them for supporting last year’s unanimous decision legalizing gay marriage.

Ternus told the Telegraph Herald of Dubuque that she and justices David Baker and Michael Streit don’t want to set an example for judges by campaigning and raising money.

“How would you feel, as a litigant, to appear in court and know that the opposing party’s attorney gave money to the judge’s re-election campaign and your attorney didn’t? Is that the kind of system Iowans want? I just hope they think about it. This is way more important than whether any one judge is retained or not,” she said.

IA: IRS Investigating Church Involved in Anti-Judge Campaigning

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

The IRS is being asked to investigate a Sioux City church that’s campaigned to unseat three Iowa Supreme Court justices. This comes following the high court’s approval of gay marriage.

A religious liberties group from Washington, D.C. has filed the complaint against Cornerstone World Outreach Church. It is calling Cornerstone’s actions an, “outrageous effort to politicize churches.”

Cornerstone pastor Cary Gordon says it’s not true the church is using donations from the collection plate to fund a political operation.

US: Proposed Immigration Bill to Include Gay/Lesbian Binational Couples

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Sen. Robert Menendez of New Jersey is expected to introduce comprehensive immigration legislation before the Senate adjourns this week for the midterm recess, according to Politico, and a source tells The Advocate that the legislation will be LGBT-inclusive.

“We fully expect that the Menendez comprehensive immigration reform bill will be inclusive of the Uniting American Families Act,” said Steve Ralls, director of communications for the pro-LGBT Immigration Equality. UAFA would allow American citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their same-sex partners for residency. “We have been in constant communication with Senator Menendez’s staff to ensure that the legislation will include lesbian and gay families,” Ralls added.

A spokesman for Senator Menendez would not confirm the report but said details of the bill would be forthcoming soon.

DC: Methodist Church Votes to Allow Gat Weddings

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

The Washington, D.C. based Foundry United Methodist Church has voted to oppose official UM doctrine on the incompatibility of same-sex sexual relationships and Christian sexual ethics and to allow its sanctuary to be used for same-sex marriage ceremonies and its clergy to perform same-sex marriage ceremonies. According to the church’s website:

“On Sunday, September 26, 2010, the members of Foundry United Methodist Church voted to allow same-gender marriages performed in its building, and to support any member of the Foundry clergy who chooses to celebrate a same-gender marriage at Foundry or elsewhere.”

The vote to adopt this policy was 367 to 8. It took place at a Church Conference duly convened under the Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church. The vote was preceded by a four-month-long period of discernment during which the congregation spent much time considering this policy in prayer, study, discussion and congregational conversations.

Australia: Tasmania to Recognize Gay/Lesbian Marriages Performed Overseas

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Tasmania is to become the first state in Australia to recognise same sex marriages from overseas.

An amendment to Tasmania’s Relationship Act was passed unopposed in the state’s Upper House, meaning marriages performed in countries where it’s legal will now be recognised in Tasmania.

A Gay and Lesbian Rights Group spokesman, Rodney Croome, has welcomed the move saying it shows Tasmania is becoming more tolerant.

CA: Judge Vaughn Walker, Prop 8/Gay Marriage Judge, to Retire

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker, who struck down California’s ban on same-sex marriage last month, will retire at the end of this year, his court said Wednesday.

The unexpected announcement gave no reason for Walker’s decision and did not describe his future plans. Walker did not return reporters’ phone calls, but a colleague said he has no reason to believe the 66-year-old judge is leaving because of any personal or physical problems.

“I think he believes that he’s accomplished what he’s set out to accomplish, and now he’s interested in living the rest of his life and not being chained to a court calendar,” U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer said. He said Walker seems to be in good health and is not being “hounded out” by critics of his marriage ruling.

Rwanda: New Anglican Archbishop Vows to Continue Fight Against Gay Marriage

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Archbishop elect, Onesphore Rwaje, who is set to succeed Anglican Archbishop Emmanuel Kolini in January, 2011, has vowed to follow in his predecessor’s footsteps by taking a firm stand against homosexuality.

“Anything that is contrary to God’s family set-up is not acceptable; there is nowhere in the Bible where same-sex marriage is encouraged. God created a man and woman to be the basis of a family,” the Archbishop-elect told The New Times, a week after he was elected to succeed Kolini.

Rwaje said homosexuality was a practice introduced by individuals who wanted to secularize theology.
