Minnesota Artist Wants to Turn Anti Gay Catholic DVD’s Into Art

Friday, September 24th, 2010

With over a million anti-gay marriage DVDs hitting the mailboxes of Minnesota Catholics in the weeks leading up to Election Day, there’s been no shortage of ideas for what to do with them. OutFront Minnesota says that recipients should mark them “return to the sender” and drop them back in the mail to the Catholic diocese which sent them, while others have suggested leaving them in the collection plate at Sunday services.

But Minneapolis artist Lucinda Naylor is encouraging Minnesotans to send her the DVD so that she can create an art project to counter the discriminatory message carried by the DVDs with one of “creativity and hope.”

“I’m an artist who has been doing a lot of work for Catholic churches over the past 15 years, so coming up with an artistic way to deal with the DVDs was my immediate first response,” said Naylor of the 14-minute created by the national Knights of Columbus and distributed by Catholic bishops in Minnesota. “I feel that the archbishop is particularly bent in regard to this issue of same-sex marriage.”

Ten States File Brief Against Gay Marriage in Perry vs. Schwarzenegger Case

Friday, September 24th, 2010

Wyoming and nine other states will file a legal brief today saying a federal court “exceeded its judicial authority” when it ruled that the U.S. Constitution requires legal marriage to include same-sex couples. In the amicus brief, which will be filed late this afternoon in the case of Perry vs. Schwarzenegger, the states disagree with the court’s ruling that same-sex marriage is a fundamental right.

The brief also asserts that individual states, not the federal court system, have final say in decisions about whether to allow same-sex marriages.

In August, a federal district judge ruled in the case that California’s Proposition 8, a voter-passed ban on same-sex marriage, was illegal on federal constitutional grounds. All previous court cases on gay marriage cited state constitutions.

DC’s Real Housewives Talk Gay Marriage

Friday, September 24th, 2010

Before Washington D.C.’s City Council voted to approve same-sex marriage in the nation’s capital, the Real Housewives of D.C. gals gathered, with cameras rolling, at gay D.C. Councilman David Catania’s office for a little chit chat over the issue. Because this is D.C. and the peasants must be informed!

Some of the ladies (Catherine “Cat” Ommanney, Lynda Erkiletian, who has a gay sister) were fully supportive of giving gays the go; others were either oblivious to the importance of full marriage rights (Mary Schmidt Amons) or outright opposed them (Stacie Scott Turner and her husband Jason). “Jason and I understand that people have different lifestyles,” Stacie says, “but it’s way more black and white than that. Marriage is between a man and a woman.” Oh really, Stacie?

Sitting in the room was this season’s main gay Paul Wharton, the hairstylist, who seems to be at the center of or somehow involved with most of the ladies’ drama. He, of course, wants the right o marry — and says that if Stacie and Jason don’t want that for him, maybe he they shouldn’t all be friends.

NH: GOP May Try to Repeal Gay Marriage Law in 2011

Friday, September 24th, 2010

Portsmouth-Newington state Rep. Jim Splaine said an effort in the Legislature next session to repeal the state’s gay marriage bill is afoot, with three bills already filed.

Splaine was speaking to students in a family programs and policy class at the University of New Hampshire on Thursday night. Professor Malcolm Smith invited Splaine, a Democrat and sponsor of the gay marriage bill signed in June 2009.

Splaine said in primary voting last week, seven Republicans who had been supportive of gay marriage faced competition from more conservative Republicans, and two of the seven were defeated.

NY: “Wedding March” Rally Planned at Brooklyn Bridge Sunday

Friday, September 24th, 2010

Gay and lesbian couples can’t legally marry in New York, but one organization hopes to change that with a massive call to action this weekend.

Marriage Equality New York, which has fought for full and equal marriage rights for same-sex couples for more than a decade, will host the 7th Annual Wedding March this Sunday. Without legal marriage, the group says same-sex couples are denied more than 1,138 federal rights and responsibilities, including those related to social security, hospital visitation and immigration, among others.

Historically one of the state’s largest events to push same-sex marriage, this year’s march begins in Foley Square with a rally and speeches, including remarks from Congressman Jerrold Nadler; Borough President Scott M. Stringer, Miss New York 2010 Claire Buffie and “The Real Housewives of New York’s” Sonja Morgan.

Minnesota Gay Groups Call Catholic Church on Political Campaigning

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

Archbishop John Neinstedt says Minnesota’s bishops will be distributing “more than one million” DVDs across Minnesota just weeks before the election. Part of an orchestrated campaign against same-sex marriage, the DVDs were funded by an anonymous donor and produced by the Knights of Columbus, a group that donates to the National Organization for Marriage, which is also running anti-gay marriage ads in Minnesota. While Neinstedt says the effort isn’t about politics, the state’s largest LGBT advocacy group slammed the new campaign.

Dennis McGrath, spokesman for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, told the Minnesota Independent that the campaign is titled, “Preserving Marriage in Minnesota.”

The DVD itself, “One Man, One Woman – Marriage and the Common Good,” is a hodgepodge of anti–gay marriage arguments including statements by Maggie Gallagher, founder of the National Organization for Marriage, who says gay marriage will be taught in schools if it is legalized. (The 14-minute video can be viewed at this Knights of Columbus website.)

MN: New NOM TV Ad Equates MLK, Anti Gay Marriage Movement

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

The Minnesota Family Council and the National Organization for Marriage launched a new television ad this week in support of Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer. It’s the fourth foray into political advertising for the socially conservative groups this cycle and the second television ad. The ad uses footage of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and says that Emmer is the only candidate that supports putting a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage on the ballot.

“It is important that the citizens of Minnesota know that both Mark Dayton and Tom Horner support imposing gay ‘marriage’ on Minnesotans without a vote of the people,” Tom Prichard of the Minnesota Family Council said in a press release about the ad. “Only Tom Emmer has publicly supported traditional marriage and the right of the people to vote on this important issue. That’s what this ad communicates.”

In an email on Wednesday afternoon, Brian Brown of the National Organization for Marriage said, “We’ve just released what may very well be our most powerful ad yet… focusing on the right of Minnesotans to vote for marriage, with footage from Dr. Martin Luther King’s famous speech and the civil rights movement.”
