Spain: Prime Minister Candidate Might Push for Gay Marriage Repeal if Elected

Sunday, October 31st, 2010

UPDATE: Mariano Rajoy has confirmed that he will scrap the law allowing same-sex couples to marry if he wins the elections in 2012. The right-wing PP leader says he does not care if the High Court has ratified the law, since he considers it ‘unconstitutional’.

———-

The president of the Partido Popular, Mariano Rajoy, has refused to say if he is “committed” to keeping the gay marriage law if elected Prime Minister in the next general election, as he says he is not sure if it is “constitutional.”

Rajoy, pictured, was asked the question today in an interview with El Pais today. The PP lodged a constitutional complaint against the measure five years ago, and Rajoy has not pledged to keep it, even if it was endorsed by the Constitutional Court.

“I will listen very carefully to the arguments of the Constitutional Court and the people, but I do not like the homosexual marriage act, and I do not think it is constitutional. My disagreement is about the use of the word ‘marriage’” said the leader of the Spanish opposition.

MN: Catholic Church Denies Communion to Gay Marriage Supporters

Sunday, October 31st, 2010

Minnesota Gay MarriageA small group of Catholics were denied communion Sunday because they wore rainbow sashes in support of same-sex marriage to Mass at the St. Paul Cathedral. Minnesota Public Radio News reports the protest has been an annual event for a decade.

Each year organizers ask the archbishop for permission to receive communion while wearing the sash, but a St. Paul-Minneapolis Archdiocese spokesman says that would be sacrilege.

Archdiocese spokesman Dennis McGrath says communion simply must not be used for a political statement.

UK: Church of England Bishops Call Gay Rights “Dangerous”

Sunday, October 31st, 2010

Church of EnglandGay rights laws are eroding Christianity and stifling free speech, Church of England bishops warned yesterday. Senior clerics, including former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey, spoke out ahead of a High Court ‘clash of rights’ hearing over whether Christians are fit to foster or adopt children.

The test case starting today involves a couple who say they have been barred from fostering because they refuse to give up their religious belief that homosexuality is unacceptable. Supporters hope their legal challenge will set a precedent for the rights of Christians to foster children without compromising their faith.

But senior bishops fear that if the ruling goes against them, it could have devastating consequences for those with religious beliefs. Either way, they believe the case will determine whether Christians can continue to express their beliefs in this country.

FL: Jacksonville May Consider Anti Discrimination Ordinance

Sunday, October 31st, 2010

Jacksonville gay rights activists are meeting with business leaders to get their support for a measure that would ban discrimination based on sexual preference. Jacksonville is the state’s only major metropolitan area that doesn’t ban discrimination against gay people.

The city’s current ordinance prohibits discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations on the basis of race, religion, disability, sex, marital status, national origin, color and age. Proponents say the measure would help the local economy.

If the measure goes before Jacksonville’s commission, opposition would be expected from religious groups and social conservatives. They would see the change as an affront to traditional moral values.

IA: New Poll Shows Voters Likely to Fire “Gay Marriage” Judges

Sunday, October 31st, 2010

Iowa Gay MarriageVoters remain split over the retention of Iowa’s Supreme Court justices, yet a new Des Moines Register Iowa Poll shows more than one-third now want to oust all three. Thirty-seven percent of likely voters say they will vote to remove all three Iowa Supreme Court justices in Tuesday’s election. Thirty-four percent say they will vote to keep all three, and 10 percent plan to retain some.

The poll shows movement toward the ouster of at least one justice, a result unseen in Iowa history since the merit-selection and retention process was adopted in 1962.

On the ballot are Chief Justice Marsha Ternus and Justices David Baker and Michael Streit, who were among seven justices who voted in the unanimous 2009 decision that allowed same-sex marriage, triggering a political uproar.

WI: Lieutenant Governor Candidate’s Gay Uncle Thinks She’s Not Sorry for Anti Gay Comments

Sunday, October 31st, 2010

Rebecca KleefischRebecca Kleefisch’s gay uncle doubts she’s sorry for likening gay marriage to marrying a dog or a table, The Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel reported. “I was incredibly disappointed,” Chris Pfauser, who’s been in an openly gay relationship with Rob Gow for 28 years, said.

The GOP candidate for Wisconsin lieutenant governor apologized for her remarks on Thursday. Kleefisch, the running mate of gubernatorial candidate Scott Walker, made her remarks before winning the Republican primary on Sept. 14, but Wisconsin-based gay rights group Fair Wisconsin admonished her comments in a recent email to backers.

Speaking on Christian-based radio WVCY in January, Kleefisch objected to Wisconsin’s domestic partnership law signed by Governor Jim Doyle. The gay-inclusive law offers registered couples 43 rights, most of which center around estate planning and hospital visitation rights.
