Uganda: “Kill the Gays” Bill May Be Close to Approval

Friday, October 29th, 2010

UgandaDavid Bahati, the sponsor of Uganda’s “kill gays” bill, says the proposal is close to being made law. “We are very confident because this is a piece of legislation that is needed in this country to protect the traditional family here in Africa, and also protect the future of our children,” said Parliament member David Bahati.

Approximately a year ago the bill was introduced. There was wide world condemnation and it was eventually shelved. Bahati insists he’s been doing the behind the door work to make the bill a reality, which according to him is soon.

“Every single day of my life now I am still pushing that it passes.”

SD: New Poll Shows 36% Support Civil Unions, 43% Are Opposed

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

As Illinois braces for a contentious battle over civil unions between same-sex partners, South Dakotans are divided over the issue, according to the results of the most recent Dakota Wesleyan University Tiger Poll.

The poll of 393 South Dakotans, conducted Sept. 20-Oct. 6 by the McGovern Center at DWU, indicated that there is no consensus among South Dakotans on the issue of civil unions. While approximately 43 percent of respondents opposed any legal recognition for same-sex couples in South Dakota, 36 percent supported some form of legal recognition, either marriage or civil unions, and 21 percent were not sure or did not respond to the question.

A similar national CBS News poll conducted Aug. 20-24, found that only 25 percent of Americans supported no legal recognition for same-sex couples when asked the following question: “Which comes closest to your view: Gay couples should be allowed to legally marry, or gay couples should be allowed to form civil unions but not legally marry, or, there should be no legal recognition of a gay couple’s relationship.”

Am I In a Dysfunctional Relationship With Barack Obama?

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

President Barack ObamaWhen we first met Barack Obama in 1996, he seemed like the perfect boyfriend: smart, loved freedom, played basketball, had a good sense of humor and lots of interesting stories and, most of all, he loved us for who we were. He wanted the world for us. Things kept on going good for a while there.

“I don’t think marriage is a civil right, but I think that not being discriminated against is a civil right.” (Obama 2004)

He saw in us what others had failed to see. We agreed on so many aspects of relationships that we’d never really seen eye-to-eye on with anyone else before.

UK: Profile of Lesbian Couple Planning Gay Marriage Action

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

A LESBIAN minister and her partner are to apply for a civil marriage, and say that they will take legal action if it is rejected. Their action is part of a campaign to allow same-sex couples to be married, and heterosexual couples to enter into civil partner ships.

The Revd Sharon Ferguson, the chief executive of the Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement (LGCM), and pastor at the Metropolitan Community Church of North London, and her partner, Franka Strietzel, will make an application on 2 November to be married at the register office at Greenwich.

By 14 December, a total of eight couples — four same-sex, four hetero sexual — will file applications for civil marriages and civil partnerships at their local register office. Under the Civil Partnerships Act 2004, only same-sex couples may enter into a civil partnership. The action is being co-ordinated by the “Equal Love” campaign run by Peter Tatchell, the human-rights activist.

Betty White Says Yes to Gay Marriage

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

Betty White in Parade MagazineIconic octogenarian Betty White is the cover girl for the latest issue of Parade magazine. And true to form, White, 88, is as spunky, humours and honest as ever in the magazine interview. Between the covers she spills on life, love and her penchant for older men. And she ain’t no cougar!

White’s status as a gay icon dates to the mid-80′s popularity of The Golden Girls. “Gays love old ladies,” she says of the phenomenon, which saw fans from West Hollywood to New York City turn on their TVs between 9 and 9:30 on Saturday nights to watch the exploits of Rose & Co. “I don’t care who anybody sleeps with.

“If a couple has been together all that time – and there are gay relationships that are more solid than some heterosexual ones – I think it’s fine if they want to get married. I don’t know how people can get so anti-something. Mind your own business, take care of your affairs, and don’t worry about other people so much.”

CT: Married Gay Couple Face Deportation of Foreign-Born Partner

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

Gay Couple Faces DeportationHenry Velandia is married to a U.S. citizen, but he might be deported anyway. That’s because the Venezuelan-born salsa teacher’s legal same-sex marriage in Connecticut isn’t recognized by the federal government. So his husband — Josh Vandiver, a Princeton University doctoral student from Colorado — can’t sponsor him for residency the way he could in a heterosexual marriage.

The New Jersey couple of four years say the Defense of Marriage Act, which legally defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman, could force them to leave the country. “You come here and you expect to get a better life. I’ve been working really hard in this country. I finally realize who I am, and who I love, and then everything blows up. It’s like a slap in the face,” Velandia told AOL News in a phone interview today.

Velandia’s application for a green card was denied, and he’s scheduled to appear before an immigration judge in Newark, N.J., on Nov. 17. Although Velandia entered the country legally, he unwittingly let his visitor status lapse, making him ineligible for the green card, said the couple’s attorney, Lavi Soloway.

Equality CA Closing Fresno, Orange County, San Jose Offices

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

The statewide LGBT advocacy group Equality California is reducing its field operations after next week’s elections. The move comes as EQCA shifts strategy in its public education efforts around marriage equality, and as the federal Proposition 8 legal case is fast-tracked through the courts.

EQCA Executive Director Geoff Kors said this week that the field office closings were still being finalized, but the Fresno, Orange County, and San Jose offices would close sometime in November. He said the Riverside office hasn’t been open for most of the year. He said the goal is to keep offices in Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, and the Inland Empire/Coachella Valley open.

“We are significantly reducing the door-to-door canvass program and increasing the coalition work,” and other activities, including EQCA’s speakers bureau, he said.

Obama: My Position on Gay Marriage May “Evolve”

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

Gay MarriagePresident Obama told liberal bloggers on Wednesday that his opinion about same-sex marriage was evolving, and that he thought cultural “trendlines” were heading toward a broader acceptance of same-sex marriage. Obama, who’s been on the record as a proponent of civil unions but an opponent of same-sex marriage, said he wasn’t ready to reverse his position, but suggested his position on the issue could “evolve.”

Obama reiterated his opposition to same-sex marriage, but said that “attitudes evolve, including mine,” during a roundtable meeting with liberal bloggers, according to a transcript published by Oliver Willis, one of the bloggers who was present. And I think that it is an issue that I wrestle with and think about because I have a whole host of friends who are in gay partnerships.

“And so while I’m not prepared to reverse myself here, sitting in the Roosevelt Room at 3:30 in the afternoon, I think it’s fair to say that it’s something that I think a lot about,” Obama added. “The one thing I will say today is I think it’s pretty clear where the trendlines are going…The arc of history.”
