WI: Green Bay Worker’s Domestic Partner Request Triggers Backlash

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

Wisconsin Domestic PartnershipsThis is not what David Fowles expected when he asked the city of Green Bay to consider granting domestic partner health care benefits this summer. The longtime city employee has been snubbed in his efforts to change city policy so that an employee’s same-sex partner can qualify for the same medical and dental insurance coverage extended to other employees’ families.

Now some aldermen want the city to align itself with a conservative group that is working to undo the limited domestic partner benefits mandated at the state level. Fowles, a truck driver in the Public Works Department, says he never imagined that his request would backfire so badly. “It’s mind-boggling,” he said. “It’s like you’re taking progress and you’re tearing it down.”

The City Council on Wednesday will consider a proposal to support Wisconsin Family Action in its lawsuit challenging the state’s domestic partner registry. Approved by state lawmakers and enacted in 2009, the registry allows same-sex couples to qualify for certain employment benefits, including family leave for medical emergencies.

IA: NOM Anti Judge Bus Tour in Cedar Rapids: 20 Show Up vs. 150 Protesters

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

NOM Bus Tour - Cedar RapidsIf event attendees are any indication of ballot totals following midterm elections Tuesday, three Iowa Supreme Court justices up for a retention vote next week will overwhelmingly maintain their seats.

At least 150 people filed through security at the Linn County Courthouse Wednesday afternoon in order to stand in support of the justices, who have been targeted by several national anti-gay groups for their unanimous 2009 ruling that legalized same-sex marriage in Iowa.

An hour later and five blocks east, supporters of the movement to oust the justices numbered 20 – and were nearly matched in numbers by counter-demonstrators. Supporters on both sides view the conflict as fundamental to the fabric of an ideal society, albeit for differing reasons, and emotions ran high when those of opposing views met face to face.

India: Lesbian Couple Marries in Koraput District

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

A marriage between same sexes is a commonly occurring thing in the west. In some western countries, gay or lesbian marriages have been legalized. In India marriages between same sexes is looked down upon as act of defying the age old institution of marriage. It is goes against the concept of marriage which is for procreation and making of a family. It has no religious sanction.

Besides, in India homosexuality is still an offense and liable for punishment. Any physical or emotional relationship between people of the same sex is frowned upon by our conservative society. Gay or Lesbian couples are harassed, hounded and finally ostracized by our society. Even the families of the couple have to bear the life long stigma of their wrong doing.

I came across this interesting story which occurred in eastern state of India, in Orissa’s Koraput district two Kondh women, both belonging to tribal society, defied all norms and traditions, when they tied nuptial knot.

Omaha: City Council Says No to Gay Discrimination Protections

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

Disappointed members of Omaha’s gay and lesbian community exchanged hugs and wiped away tears Tuesday after the City Council voted down a proposal to give them new protections against discrimination. The council “shirked its responsibility to this city and this state,” said Omaha gay activist Scott Winkler. “They did a disservice to both.”

After nearly five hours of discussion, the ordinance failed on a 3-3 vote. Councilmen Ben Gray, Pete Festersen and Chris Jerram voted in favor; Jean Stothert, Garry Gernandt and Thomas Mulligan were opposed. Councilman Franklin Thompson, who has called for a public vote on the issue, abstained.

The meeting ended soon after the vote. Council members went into closed session and did not stick around the legislative chambers to comment on the vote. Gray, author of the ordinance, proposed that gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people be a protected class under city code protection they don’t currently have under state or federal law.

HI: New Poll Shows 48% Support Civil Unions Bill, 44% Opposed

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

Hawaii Civil Unions BillVoters are torn over civil unions. A new Hawaii Poll found that 48 percent generally support a civil unions bill passed by the state Legislature and vetoed by Gov. Linda Lingle this year, while 44 percent oppose the bill and 9 percent are undecided. The margin of error was 4 percentage points.

Gay activists and religious conservatives tried to make civil unions an issue in the September primary and November general election, but with voters so divided, it is unlikely the issue alone will swing many campaigns.

“It sounds like it’s split right down the middle. That probably does pretty much reflect where most folks are,” said Dan Boylan, a political analyst and former University of Hawaii-West Oahu history professor. “It’s a really complex issue.”

Whoopi Films Marriage Equality Ad for Fight Back NY (On Top Magazine)

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

Whoopi Goldberg, Fight Back NY“It’s time to stand up for our friends,” Whoopi Goldberg says in a new ad for Fight Back NY. “Here in New York there are a couple of things we like to call no-brainers: avoiding Times Square on New Year’s Eve, rooting for the Yankees, and standing up for your friends.”

Goldberg’s friends are gay men and lesbians who cannot marry in New York. And in a new gay marriage ad, the 54-year-old actress-comedian-talk show host urges New Yorkers to oust state senators who last year rejected a gay marriage bill.

“See, now is the time to stand up for our friends,” Goldberg adds. “And really, darling, it’s a no-brainer.”

AK: GOP Senate Candidate Joe Miller Would Vote for Constitutional Ban on Gay Marriage

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

Alaska Senate Candidate Joe MillerRepublican Senate nominee Joe Miller of Alaska said Tuesday he would vote for a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. “That’s up to the people,” Miller ultimately said of a constitutional amendment in an interview with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Tuesday night. “If you get a three-quarters vote ratifying – I’d vote for it. I would.”

Previously in the interview – which occurred with Maddow and Miller walking in and out of a building and down escalators before the Republican hopped in the front seat of an SUV mid-questioning – Miller repeatedly touted states’ rights, which seemed to create a contradiction between his hands-off beliefs on federal government and potential support for a constitutional same-sex marriage ban.

“There are different approaches to different values,” Miller said. “It’s really a state issue. It should be handled at the state level.”
