Federal Finance Minister Penny Wong’s push for gay marriage rights will increase the chances of same-sex marriage laws being introduced in the state, proponents say. On Saturday, Senator Wong was given a standing ovation at the Labor State Convention after endorsing a motion supporting same-sex marriage.
The motion, which was passed 90 votes to 88, will increase pressure on the federal Labor party to change its formal position on gay marriage at its national conference next year. South Australia’s resolution mirrors those already passed in Victoria, Tasmania, the ACT and the Northern Territory.
Last week, a same-sex marriage Bill co-sponsored by state ALP backbencher Ian Hunter and Greens MLC Tammy Franks was deferred because Premier Mike Rann had not declared whether the issue would be subject to a conscience vote.
