NC: After Budget, GOP to Go After Gay Marriage, Leader Says

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

The state’s ailing budget will take precedent, but Republicans will have time to tackle other issues, including gay marriage, abortion and illegal immigration, when the new legislative session begins, said newly elected Speaker Pro Tem Dale Folwell, R-Forsyth.

Folwell, who won his fourth term in the November election, was voted Nov. 20 into what is basically the No. 2 spot in the House leadership hierarchy. As speaker pro tem, he’ll get to hold the gavel from time to time, overseeing formal sessions in the House of Representatives when new Speaker Thom Tillis, R-Mecklenberg, is out of the room.

He’ll also help push the new majority’s agenda when the session starts Jan. 26, and make sure the largest freshman class in North Carolina House history – a product of the historic Republican takeover earlier this month – knows what it’s doing. With his number-crunching skills – Folwell is an accountant by trade – it’s a good bet he’ll be heavily involved as the GOP looks for cuts to help balance a $3 billion-plus hole in next year’s state budget.

Australia: Marriage Equality Rallies Across Country Last Week

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

Australia Gay Marriage RalliesNational rallies on November 20 and 27 were held in support of equal marriage rights for lesbian, gay, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) couples. November 20 was also Transgender Day of Remembrance. The day started in 1999 to remember those who were killed by anti-transgender hatred or prejudice.

Across the country, trans activists addressed equal marriage rights. A minute’s silence was held to remember those killed by transphobic violence. On November, 3000 people marched in Melbourne. The young and colourful crowd marched through the city to the marriage registry on Spring St.

Speakers included comedian Josh Thomas, Hannah Gatsby and students Hannah Williams and Savannah Supski, who drew media headlines after being banned from going to their school formal together.

Australia: Wong’s Conversion on Marriage Equality Improves Chances for Passage

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

Federal Finance Minister Penny Wong’s push for gay marriage rights will increase the chances of same-sex marriage laws being introduced in the state, proponents say. On Saturday, Senator Wong was given a standing ovation at the Labor State Convention after endorsing a motion supporting same-sex marriage.

The motion, which was passed 90 votes to 88, will increase pressure on the federal Labor party to change its formal position on gay marriage at its national conference next year. South Australia’s resolution mirrors those already passed in Victoria, Tasmania, the ACT and the Northern Territory.

Last week, a same-sex marriage Bill co-sponsored by state ALP backbencher Ian Hunter and Greens MLC Tammy Franks was deferred because Premier Mike Rann had not declared whether the issue would be subject to a conscience vote.

OH: Bowling Green Vote Mirrors Larger Fight

Saturday, November 27th, 2010

Bowling Green, OhioThirty years ago, a vote like the one just decided in this university town wouldn’t have happened; gay-rights activism hadn’t taken root across most of America. Thirty years hence, such votes may seem a historical curiosity in a time of equality for gays.

Right now, though, the gay rights movement is at a tipping point, as epitomized by Bowling Green’s divisive referendum on extending anti-discrimination protections to gays. The vote was so close that it took three extra weeks to determine whether the two measures passed.

Nationally, gay-rights supporters and their conservative opponents are trading victories and setbacks, and the public is deeply divided on same-sex marriage. Could the push for full equality be stalled or reversed? Probably not, if public opinion evolves at its current pace.

Australia: Greens Leader Won’t Marry Partner When Marriage Equality Law Passes

Saturday, November 27th, 2010

Bob Brown and PartnerGREENS leader Bob Brown will not marry his partner if gay marriage is legalised in Australia – an event the party founder has predicted will occur in the Gillard government’s first term. In an interview with The Sun-Herald, Senator Brown reflected on the extraordinary political events of this year, including the elevation of his party to become the third force in Australian federal politics, leadership speculation within the party and the spectre of “the big end of town” mobilising against the Greens.

Senator Brown claimed ownership of the recent push to legalise same-sex marriage, but said he felt no duty to marry his long-time partner, farmer and activist Paul Thomas.

“We had our relationship registered under the Tasmanian laws … a couple of years back. No, I don’t see us having a future marriage ceremony because we are very content with things as they are,” he said.

Two Thousand Turn Out for Sydney Marriage Equality Rally

Saturday, November 27th, 2010

Doug CameronStar Observer estimates upwards of two thousand people turned out to march and hear speakers including Labor Senator Doug Cameron and Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon at a same sex marriage rally beginning at the Sydney Town Hall on Saturday.

Senator Cameron was among the first of a group of colleagues to break rank with his party’s official line on relationship recognition for same-sex couples and has promised a strong push for a change in policy at the ALP’s next national Conference in December 11.

Cameron told the crowd that commitment ceremonies and relationship registries were not acceptable alternatives to giving LGBTI Australians full equality and that he was proud to stand side by side with the LGBTI community in their fight for justice.

South Australia Labor Supports Marriage Equality

Saturday, November 27th, 2010

Penny WongThe South Australian branch of the Labor Party has passed a motion supporting same-sex marriage at its state conference in Adelaide.

On Saturday afternoon a resolution was moved by a member of Rainbow Labor and seconded by Senator Penny Wong, reading, “This Convention calls upon the ALP National Conference to amend the platform to support the legal right of all adult couples in Australia to be married if they so choose, and for that marriage to be recognised and registered by law in Australia, regardless of the sexual orientation, or gender, of the parties to the marriage.”

Wong also spoke in favour of the motion, telling the conference she would be advocating within the party for the ALP to support equality, “in relation to marriage or same-sex couples”.
