MI: Transgender Man and Fiancee Denied Marriage License

Friday, December 31st, 2010

Transgender Man in MichiganThis occurred in Pontiac, Michigan. Via Michigan Messenger with video from the local Fox affiliate:

“Jordan Swan, who is a female to male transgender man, says he went to the Oakland County Clerk this week to marry his fiancee. The two paid for their marriage license, swore their oaths and signed on the dotted line. Then they were off to the chapel to get married… or so they thought. Swan tells Fox 2 News that shortly after the happy couple left the clerk’s office they received a call telling them they had to return to the offices to get a refund for their marriage license fee. The reason they were offered when they got to the offices? Swan is not a man because he doesn’t have a penis.”

Unfortunately for the county officials, it’s the penis that makes the man.

PA: GOP Preparing Broadly Written Gay Marriage Ban for Constitution

Friday, December 31st, 2010

Western Pennsylvania State Representative Darryl Metcalfe (R-Cranberry Township) has lost no time using his new role as incoming Chair of the State Government to issue an anti-marriage equality smackdown on his colleagues in the State House. From the Pittsburgh City Paper Slag Heap blog:

“As its name suggests, Metcalfe’s committee handles legislation that pertains to state government and its powers. Constitutional amendments, campaign-finance and other election reforms … all such mess as that. And wouldn’t you know it? That’s also the committee that deals with issues like immigration reform, a pet cause for Metcalfe.”

The committee also deals with Constitutional Amendments, as in “Marriage Protection.” Metcalfe has already circulated a memo seeking support for his plan to reintroduce this measure in 2011. He claims to use language that passed the State House in 2006, but was defeated in the Senate due to tricky political maneuvers.

Growing Up Better Adjusted: Children of Lesbian Couples Tend to Have Better Childhoods

Friday, December 31st, 2010

Lesbian parenting has been a hotly debated topic for years, but it has recently drawn more attention as gay rights issues took over the headlines. Critics have long argued that the children of lesbians, and of same-sex couples in general, will face a harder life due to coming from a socially unaccepted family structure. However, a recent study suggests otherwise. Evidence proves that the children of lesbian parents may actually fare better in life than the children of heterosexual parents.

The study, published in Pediatrics, the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, found that the children of lesbian couples tended to have higher social skills, did better in school, and had fewer incidents of rule-breaking and aggression than the children of heterosexual parents, according to an article published on CNN. The nearly 25-year-old study followed 78 lesbian couples who conceived through sperm donations, regularly assessing the psychological well-being of the children of these couples through questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaire included queries about family and peer relationships, academics, and personal feelings, the results of which were then compared with the answers from children of heterosexual couples.

The findings that the children of lesbians functioned better than those of traditional mother-and-father parentage refute concerns long held by critics of same-sex parenting. Critics have argued that children of same-sex couples are more likely to grow up psychologically disturbed because of harassment and social exclusion, but a number of factors may be behind why this is not the case. For one, homophobia, while still entirely too prevalent in society, has decreased, so the children of same-sex couples are less likely to be harassed solely for that reason. In addition, lesbian couples are typically more involved in the lives of their children so they may deal with issues of harassment and bullying before it can cause any real emotional trauma in the child. This is because for lesbian couples, having a child is a more labor-intensive process, as well as an expensive one, so those who do successfully conceive are more likely to become devoted and communicative parents.

To have a child, lesbian parents must find a sperm donor and undergo an invasive artificial insemination process. Sometimes, several of these processes must occur before a woman can become successfully pregnant, and all of these treatments are costly. For this reason, most lesbian couples wait until they are financially stable and mentally ready to have a child before trying to conceive. With heterosexual couples, however, there is an increased chance of unexpectedly conceiving a child, thereby increasing the chances of the child being raised by a couple who were not financially, emotionally, or mentally ready to become parents.

The main reason behind why the children of lesbian parents tend to fare better, then, is not that lesbians simply make better parents. Rather, the findings indicate that parents who are financially and emotionally prepared to have a child tend to raise well-adjusted kids. Due to the work involved in having a child for lesbian couples, they are typically better prepared for the responsibilities of raising a child when they become pregnant than heterosexual couples. Still, these findings show that same-sex parents can raise children without all of the psychological implications that critics had originally feared.

WY: It’s Official: GOP to Introduce Constitutional Ban to Marriage Equality

Friday, December 31st, 2010

GOP Rep Owen PetersenTwo Republican lawmakers in Wyoming say they’ll introduce a bill that defines marriage as a heterosexual union in the state’s constitution, the Wyoming Tribune-Eagle reported.

The resolution would ask voters to amend the Wyoming Constitution to define marriage. Similar proposals in 2007 and 2009 failed, but anticipated support from a newly-elected Republican majority in both sides of the Capitol has given supporters new hope.

“It’s about the right of Wyoming voters to vote,” said Republican Senator Curt Meier, a co-sponsor of the legislation. “We’re setting a community standard for Wyoming.”

NC: County Official Stands By Remarks Calling Gays “Sexual Predators”

Friday, December 31st, 2010

A North Carolina county official, faced with criticism that has spread nationwide, says he is standing by his denunciation of gay people as “sexual predators.”

“People are entitled to their opinion and that includes me,” Mecklenburg County Commissioner Bill James told The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer Thursday. “I don’t expect people to agree with me. It’s a political discussion and I wouldn’t have raised it on my own, but [county board official Jennifer Roberts] decided to wade in on it.”

Roberts, chairwoman of the board, had proposed an official letter thanking members of the state congressional delegation who supported the repeal of the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. Other commissioners objected, and she is sending her own letter.

Apple Rejects Anti Marriage Equality App A Second Time

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

Manhattan Declaration AppOriginally rejected in late November to loud protest from the wingnuts, the anti-gay Manhattan Declaration app has again been rejected by Apple’s app store, GLAAD reports:

“Apple rejected the second submission on the same grounds as the first, noting that the app is likely “to expose a group to harm” and “to be objectionable and potentially harmful to others.”

The Manhattan Declaration website posted a statement on December 23 announcing Apple’s rejection of the app, and the makers of the content plan to take the issue to the Apple’s App Review Board after the holidays. Media coverage of this second rejection does not seem to have been picked up by many conservative outlets as of yet.”

Being Gay in India

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

being gay in indiaI grew up in Saharanpur, a “small town” of 1 million people in India’s most populous state, Uttar Pradesh. Saharanpur is very like the hundreds of other towns littering the vast plains of the region, and not notable for much except its mangoes and woodcarving industry.

In the early 90s I was at a Catholic-run school in the town and had my first sexual experiences with another boy near the railway tracks. That’s what my brother was alluding to when he phoned me a couple of nights ago with what he called “breaking news from our childhood”.

Under a headline saying “Gay party has been exposed”, the local Hindi-language newspaper, Amar Ujala, had published a photograph of some 20 frightened-looking men sitting on the floor, many trying to conceal their faces with shawls and scarves.
