AZ: State Prepares to Kick Straight Unmarried Partners Off Healthcare Plan

Friday, December 24th, 2010

On Jan. 1, Arizona will cut off health-care benefits to about 600 heterosexual, unmarried domestic partners of state employees.

Gov. Jan Brewer and the Legislature made the benefit change as part of budget cuts in 2009. They intended to eliminate benefits for a much broader group, including adult children and gay partners of state employees.

However, the new federal health-care law and a court ruling have forced the state to continue covering those groups, leaving opposite-sex partners the only class impacted by the cuts.

VP Biden: Gay Marriage is Inevitable

Friday, December 24th, 2010

Joe BidenWhat a moment this week when, in front of a bursting room at the U.S. Department of Interior, President Obama signed legislation that authorizes the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” the military’s ban on openly gay servicemembers. The room was filled with scores of activists, politicians, and former members of the U.S. military discharged for being gay.

Then, this morning on Good Morning America, Vice President Joe Biden was asked a question about marriage equality. And his answer? It only confirms what many of us have been saying for years: it’s not a question of if, it’s a question of when.

“I think the country’s evolving. And I think there’s an inevitability for a national consensus on gay marriage,” Biden said. He then compared the issue of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” to marriage equality, saying that the pendulum swung on the issue of opening up the military, to the point where clear majorities saw ending “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” as the right thing to do. Marriage equality, Biden said, is heading in a very similar direction.

NOM Launches Attach on FCKH8

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) on Wednesday launched a campaign decrying the tactics of gay marriage group FCKH8.

The nascent group, helmed by producer-activist Luke Montgomery, sells t-shirts, stickers and calendars to support gay rights groups.

The group’s first video Prop 8 is H8: Straight Talk on Gay Marriage has been viewed more than 2 million times. But its frequent – some would say excessive – use of the word fuck has divided gay rights advocates.

WI: Governor Doyle Asks Judge to Retain Domestic Partner Benefits

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

Wisconsin Domestic PartnershipsGovernor Jim Doyle has asked a judge not to throw out Wisconsin’s legal benefits for unmarried couples.

Instead, the governor wants the court to drop a lawsuit filed by Wisconsin Family Action, which claims that the one-year-old domestic partner registry creates a legal status similar to gay marriage.

The pro-family group is the same one that encouraged 59 percent of Wisconsin voters to pass a constitutional amendment in 2006 to ban same-sex marriages and civil unions.

TX: Cancellation of Health Benefits in El Paso on Hold Pending Trial

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

The City of El Paso has moved the lawsuit titled Ronald G. Martin, Jr., et. al. vs. The City of El Paso, Texas; Cause No. 2010-4936, from the State Court to Federal Court. U.S. District Court Judge Frank Montalvo has extended the Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) from December 29, 2010 to January 13, 2011 at 9:00 a.m., when a preliminary injunction hearing is scheduled to take place.

Due to the TRO, the City of El Paso has advised those employees/retirees who previously received letters cancelling their coverage because of the ordinance that they will not see a benefit change at this time. The City will continue to keep them informed concerning this litigation and what impact it has on their benefits.

At El Paso City Council’s meeting this past Tuesday, City Council skipped a compromise in the battle for benefits of domestic partners, because of a judge’s restraining order, paving the way for the lawsuit against the city by some slated to lose their health insurance.

MD: New Push for Marriage Equality

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

Maryland Gay MarriageThe prize is the same, but the playing field has improved for activists seeking marriage equality in Maryland over the past three years.

It was in September of 2007 when the Maryland Court of Appeals announced its decision to uphold a 1973 state law defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman by a 4-3 ruling. The 19 plaintiffs challenging that law as discriminatory with the help of Equality Maryland, the state’s equal rights organization, remain active in the fight for marriage equality. And according to Morgan Meneses-Sheets, executive director of Equality Maryland, 2011 has the potential to be the year when it happens.

Maryland’s 90-day legislative session begins Jan. 12, 2011. “Right now our family-law statute defines marriage as being between a man and a woman and so what we’re doing is taking out that gender requirement,” she says of the marriage-equality bill sponsored by Del. Ben Barnes (D-Anne Arundel and Prince George’s Counties) in the House and Sen. Richard Madaleno (D-Montgomery County) in the Senate.

UK: Liberal Democrat Calls for Gay Marriage Legislation by 2015

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

Stephen GilbertLiberal Democrat MP Steve Gilbert has called for progress on UK marriage equality, saying he hopes legislation can be introduced by 2015.

The openly gay MP said in the House of Commons this week that while parliament obtaining a civil partnership licence was “groundbreaking”, allowing gay couples to wed would be more so.

He said: “It was a groundbreaking moment when parliament itself was granted a licence to hold civil partnerships and when [Labour MP] Chris Bryant and his partner were the first to benefit from that.”
