NE: Judge Won’t Let Lesbian Couple Divorce

Monday, January 31st, 2011

Nebraska Lesbian DivorceFurther complicating the patchwork of marriage laws that exists in the United States, a Nebraska judge has ruled that because same-sex marriage is illegal in Nebraska, same-sex divorces aren’t allowed either.

Otoe County district judge Randall Rehmeier ruled that a lesbian couple legally married in Vermont eight years ago cannot be granted a divorce by the state of Nebraska because that state does not recognize same-sex marriage.

CO: State Legislator to Introduce Civil Unions Law

Monday, January 31st, 2011

Colorado Civil UnionsDenver Democratic state Senator Pat Steadman is sponsoring a bill that would make same-sex civil unions legal in Colorado. The move is being cheered as long overdue by gay rights supporters, who have been stymied in efforts to win equality by a constitutional amendment that outlaws gay marriage in the state.

In weighing whether or not to introduce the legislation this summer, Steadman told the Colorado Independent that “promoting a lesser status for gay people is not ideal” but that, in the short term, “people could really benefit from civil unions.”

Steadman’s bill, which will be sponsored by Denver Rep. Mark Ferrandino in the House, will confer on couples entering into a civil union all of the legal rights granted through marriage- rights that include, for example, inheriting property, sharing health insurance policies, making crucial end-of-life medical and financial decisions.

IA: Four Hundred Attend Public Hearing on Marriage Equality Repeal

Monday, January 31st, 2011

Nearly 400 people listened for more than two hours to a debate over equality, fairness, liberty, God’s law, natural law and what’s best for families, the state and society.

At a public hearing on House Joint Resolution 6, which calls for a referendum on a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, some speakers defended traditional marriage – one man and one woman – while others said gender does not define marriage or family.

“Marriage is two people committed to love each other and build a life together sharing one another’s hopes, dreams and a lifetime together,” said Dawn BarbouRoske of Iowa City, who spoke with her wife and their two daughters at her side. “Our marriage is roped together with love, honesty, hard work, laughter trust and respect … core values not dependent on gender.”

Fast-Food Chain to Drop Support of Anti Gay Groups

Monday, January 31st, 2011

Chick-Fil-AChick-Fil-A President Dan Cathy says the company is dropping its support for anti-gay marriage groups. The announcement comes after gay website GoodAsYou.org blogged about the chicken restaurant’s sponsorship of a marriage seminar closely associated with the anti-gay marriage group Pennsylvania Family Institute.

In a two-minute-twenty-seven-second video message released nearly three weeks ago, Cathy denied that the company’s donation was an endorsement of its values.

“Let me be clear, Chick-Fil-A serves all people and values all people,” Cathy said.

Ireland: Finance Minister Vows Tax Entitlements for Gay Couples Will Be Backdated

Monday, January 31st, 2011

FINANCE Minister Brian Lenihan has promised tax entitlements for gay and cohabiting couples officially recognised by the State will be backdated to the start of the year — even though the law to allow this will not be passed on his watch.

The minister saw the Finance Bill, which enacts the Budget, pass through the Seanad on a historic Saturday night sitting without any changes that would require it to return to the Dail. The legislation was passed by 30 votes to 20.

In an ongoing spat between Mr Lenihan and the Green Party, the minister’s former junior coalition partners backed a proposal for a vote on naming and shaming bank staff who got bonuses. The three Green senators backed the Labour Party’s suggestion to identify bank employees at all levels who got bonuses.

UK: Equal Love Takes Marriage Equality Challenge to European Court

Monday, January 31st, 2011

United Kingdom Gay MarriageA challenge against the UK’s bans on gay marriage and straight civil partnerships will be filed at the European Court of Human Rights this week. The Equal Love campaign, led by gay rights activist Peter Tatchell, seeks to open both institutions up to all couples, regardless of sexual orientation.

The UK legalised civil partnerships for gay couples in 2006, but campaigners say they are not good enough.
Four gay and four straight couples tried to register for ceremonies they were not entitled to in the run-up to Christmas.

Their letters of rejection will be used to form the case. The couples are taking the case to a European court to avoid paying the UK government legal fees if they lose.
