Brazil: 171 Politicians Join Marriage Equality Effort

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Jean WyllysA group of 171 senators and deputies in Brazil have joined a “Parliamentary Front for the LGBT Community,” which will promote the legalization of gay marriage, Spanish news agency EFE reported.

The effort is helmed by Senator Marta Suplicy and Congressman Jean Wyllys, Brazil’s first openly gay lawmaker.

Wyllys, who parlayed a 2005 Big Brother Brazil win into a political career, is also an outspoken gay rights advocate. A member of the socialist-inspired P-SOL party, Wyllys has said he’s received homophobic threats on social networks, including Twitter, for backing the intiative.

Ricky Martin May Marry Carlos Gonzalez in Spain

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Ricky Martin to Marry PartnerSinger Ricky Martin wants to marry his boyfriend Carlos Gonzalez and the couple is considering marrying in Spain.

During an appearance Monday on Spain’s El Progama de Ana Rosa, journalist Miguel Angel Nicolas said the couple was considering marrying in Spain. He added that the Spanish model Esther Canadas, a friend of the Living’ la Vida Loca singer, has offered to help Martin become a Spanish citizen. Spain legalized gay marriage in 2005.

Martin cannot marry in Puerto Rico, a territory of the United States, because it is not legal. While five states and the District of Columbia have legalized gay marriage, federal law does not recognize such unions.

DC: House GOP Going After DC Marriage Equality

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Washington DC Gay MarriageThe Republicans just can’t quit their legislative gay-bashing. They’re taking aim at DC’s marriage law. Can’t say we expected this to happen:

Jim Jordan, chairman of the 176-member Republican Study Committee, is leading an effort by conservatives to press House leaders for floor votes in opposition to gay marriage.

Jordan’s first project is a draft proposal that would set up a referendum to overturn a year-old District of Columbia law recognizing marriages of gay and lesbian couples. The move comes as conservatives express a desire to move beyond a focus on spending cuts and expand the House majority’s legislative agenda to include social issues.

New Tax Campaign in US: “Refuse to Lie”

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Refuse to LieEquality Florida tips us to a new campaign in which legally married gay couples will “refuse to lie” and will therefore file joint tax returns.

Each year the federal government demands that thousands of married couples lie. The federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) not only denies legally married gay couples the benefits of heterosexual marriage, but we are also told to disavow our spouses and file our taxes as “single.”

The Federal Government must stop requiring legally married gay couples to deny the existence of our families and hide our marriages. It is dehumanizing and it is wrong. Across the country, legally married gay couples are taking a stand. We are refusing to lie about the fact that we are married.

Australia: Tasmania to Recognize Gay Marriages from Other Countries April 1st

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Tasmania Gay MarriageA new Tasmanian law recognising overseas civil partnerships and same-sex marriages comes into effect tomorrow (April 1), the tenth anniversary of the world’s first legal same-sex marriages.

An amendment to the Relationships Act, passed in September last year, allows the Tasmanian Government to automatically recognise interstate civil partnerships and overseas civil partnerships and same-sex marriages after each scheme has been through an assessment process.

From tomorrow, civil partnerships from Victoria, New South Wales, the ACT (Australian Capital Territory), New Zealand and the UK will be recognised in Tasmania, along with civil partnerships and same-sex marriages from all thirteen Canadian provinces.

DE: Senate Committee Passes Civil Unions Bill

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Gap Police Officer Testifies

A Senate civil unions bill that would recognize “solemnized” same-sex relationships with the same legal protections and requirements as marriage — was voted out of the state Senate Administrative Services Committee after a two-hour hearing Wednesday.

The bill — S.B. 30 — sponsored by Sen. David Sokola, D-Newark North, with more than two dozen co-sponsors, now goes to the Senate floor for debate.

Committee members heard impassioned testimony from opponents and supporters of the bill, one reading from the Bible, another reading a letter from his son, all saying the state would be significantly changed for the better or the worse. The balcony was packed and so was much of the floor of the Senate chamber.

Hungary: Gays to Protest New Constitution

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Gay HungaryHungarian gay civil rights groups will hold a demonstration in Budapest on April 15 against the new constitution draft’s passages on marriage and equal rights for gay people, the organisers said on Wednesday.

Daniel Kaderjak, the chairman of one of the groups, said the draft defines marriage in a way which causes segregation. The gay groups have started an online petition on this subject, signed by 700 so far, including some famous public figures, said Kaderjak.

The petitioners have started to operate a Coalition for Gay Equality (MEGYEK), which will organise the demonstration on the square in front of parliament.

Washington Gay MarriageUnder a bill now heading to the governor’s desk, the state of Washington will recognize gay and lesbian marriages performed legally elsewhere.
