Gay Friendly San Francisco Bay Area Wedding Vendors

Mitch Landy, HarpistMitch Landy combines a classical music education with his own eclectic musical tastes, bringing a fresh approach to the harp. He lived in Philadelphia until 1991, and was very involved in the city’s Irish music community. His involvement with Irish music exposed him to the magic of the Celtic harp, and he went on to adapt pieces from the classical literature to the harp, an instrument traditionally associated with Irish music.

Soon after, he learned to play the concert harp , with its greater facility to handle the key changes and complex harmonies of classical and pop music.

Mitch won 2nd prize on the Celtic harp at the 1995 International Pop & Jazz Harpfest, and now focuses his talents on the rich harmonic potential of the pedal harp, arranging jazz classics from the 20′s and 30′s, as well as contemporary music, and improvisation; and of course, classical pieces. Never limiting himself to an existing repertoire of published harp music, he continues to perform mostly his own arrangements, and brings a unique to everything he plays.

Being Gay in Bangladesh

Sunday, March 27th, 2011

Being Gay in BangladeshIn Geneva this week, the United Nations Human Rights Council passed a wide ranging resolution supporting LGBT rights. The United States helped to lead an 85 countries into supporting the resolution, which including a statement on the decriminalization of LGBT conduct in countries where engaging same sex relations are illegal.

Here in Bangladesh, the government has not quite gotten the message. Same sex sex is illegal here, and punishable by months in prison.

The law, however, is only very rarely enforced. It is more common that unscrupulous policemen shake down men who have sex with men for bribes. And it apparently not uncommon for these unscrupulous police to demand fellatio from the men they have arrested.

Netherlands: 20% of Dutch Gay Couples Married

Netherlands Gay Marriage

Photo from Wikipedia

Just 20 percent of Dutch homosexual couples are married, compared with 80 percent of heterosexual couples, fresh figures by Statistics Netherlands show ten years after same-sex marriage was legalised. Since 1 April 2001, when the Netherlands became the first country to legalise same-sex marriage, some 15,000 gay and lesbian couples have tied the knot.

That is two percent of all marriages celebrated in Holland, and just 20 percent of the 55,000 same-sex couples the country numbers.

Among the country’s 4.1 million heterosexual couples, 80 percent are married.
Divorce among same-sex couples accounts for one percent of all divorces. “The figures show that over the past ten years gay and lesbian couples have been behaving the same way as straight couples”, demographer Jan Latten of Statistics Netherlands says.

CO: Civil Unions Bill Assigned to House Judicial Committee

Sunday, March 27th, 2011

Colorado Civil UnionsA bill that would grant gay couples the right to civil unions will be heard by a House committee whose members include a former aide to Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave and three El Paso County Republicans.

The sponsors of Senate Bill 172 said that sending the measure to the House Judiciary Committee was the logical thing to do because it concerns laws and it was heard in the Senate by its judiciary panel.

But Sen. Pat Steadman and Rep. Mark Ferrandino, both Denver Democrats and gay men, admitted they are worried about the reception it will receive from that panel.

Being Gay in Uganda

Saturday, March 26th, 2011

John BoscoAs a child in Uganda, John Bosco remembers hearing an old wives’ tale that if a man fell asleep in the sun and it crossed over him, he would wake up as a woman. “I used to try that as a kid,” says John now, some 30 years later. He sits at a table in a busy cafe across the road from the railway station in Southampton, his fingers playing with the handle of a glass of hot chocolate.

“I’d spend all day lying under the sun. From childhood, I wanted to be a girl. I wanted dolls. At school, I played netball. I wanted to dress up like a girl … I rubbed herbs into my chest that were meant to make your breasts grow. I tried everything but it didn’t work.”

He tells me that there was not one single moment when he realised he was gay; that the knowledge of it had always been there, unexpressed until he found the right words. As he grew older, John started being attracted to men. On the radio, he heard stories of gay couples being beaten and killed by police. He says that if he could have changed himself, he would because he so desperately wanted to be considered “normal”, to fit in, to make his family proud.

Stop 8 Dissects NOM Ad Against President Obama

Saturday, March 26th, 2011

Stop 8 VideoThe gay marriage group Stop 8 has called the National Organization for Marriage’s (NOM) attack ad against President Barack Obama’s decision to no longer defend the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) ‘gibberish.’

The president recently announced he would no longer defend the Clinton-era law because he believes portions of the law that bans federal recognition of the legal marriages of gay and lesbian couples to be unconstitutional. In a one-minute-twenty-three-second video released last week, NOM accuses the president of turning his back on marriage.

“DOMA was passed by an overwhelming bipartisan majority and signed into law by President Clinton, but that didn’t seem to matter to Obama,” the male announcer says in the ad. “Instead of doing his job to uphold the law he’s dumping it behind our backs.”
