US: More States Allow Marriage Between Cousins Than Between Gays

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

Cousin Marriage Vs. Gay Marriage19 U.S. states allow residents restriction-free access to marrying a first cousin and starting a large, genetically limited family. Meanwhile, only five U.S. states currently allow citizens to marry someone of the same sex.

I know what you’re thinking: what’s wrong with cousin marriage? I had a crush on my second cousin Randy who I still think was pretty good-looking for a 12 year-old. I never confessed my love though. He lived 2,000 miles away, which may as well have been from here to the moon at that age, and it didn’t help that he was the family’s black sheep, drug-smoking and car-stealing by age 14.

But the real deal-breaker came in 6th grade Social Studies when I learned about the Spanish Monarchy. Apparently, Charles II sprung from 150 years of incestual propagation (his mother was his father’s niece). He wound up with an estimated I.Q. of 70, and reportedly he was so physically challenged that he couldn’t sit up, walk or eat without assistance.

DC: Why Are Republicans Waiting to Try to Repeal Marriage Equality Law?

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

In the five months since they took control of the House, Republicans have banned government-funded abortions in the District, revived a private-school voucher plan and tried — so far unsuccessfully — to end the city’s needle-exchange programs.

Yet despite past efforts, Republicans have not mounted an assault this year on the District’s same-sex marriage law: No bill has been introduced to overturn it, nor has any lawmaker publicly sought support from colleagues for such a measure.

Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) and other city activists are preemptively lobbying against any efforts to repeal the law. On Tuesday, she criticized Republicans for their efforts to slow the repeal of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on gays in the military. The issue was important, she said in a news release, “considering our determination to preserve our own marriage equality law, which is under attack in the House.”

DC Church Pushes for Marriage Equality Throughout Methodist Church

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

DC’s Foundry United Methodist Church has a rich history. It’s the church attended by the Clintons when Bill was president. And, the Church and its Senior Minister, Rev. Dean Snyder, are now taking a leading role in changing the United Methodist Church’s position on same sex-marriage. There was major progress in that direction over the weekend. From Washington Post:

The Baltimore-Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church narrowly approved a groundbreaking same-sex marriage resolution Saturday, setting the stage for a high-stakes vote on the matter at the national conference next year.

The resolution, passed at the church’s annual local conference, would amend the church’s Book of Discipline to allow pastors to perform same-sex marriages and ceremonies in member churches in jurisdictions where legislatures already have approved gay marriage laws, such as the District.

IL: Civil Unions Foes Push for Public Vote

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

Peter LabarberaOpponents of the Illinois civil unions law that takes effect this week want a referendum that allows people to vote on the measure.

The Chicago Tribune reports on demonstrations held in downtown Chicago Friday between supporters and opponents of the new law, which would give same-sex couples in civil unions the same rights as married couples in the state. Illinois will begin issuing civil unions licenses on Wednesday, followed by a ceremony for 30 same-sex couples in Millennium Park the next day.

“There’s a battle between gay rights and religious freedom,” said Peter LaBarbera, president of Americans for Truth, as he showed people how to complete the signature sheets on which he and other opponents will try to collect the required 300,000 signatures.

The Marriage Equality Divide in the Latino Community

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

Ruben Diaz, Erica DiazIf it were up to State Senator Rev. Ruben Diaz, New York would never allow for same sex marriage. Ever.

“I believe that God does not allow gay marriage. It’s the Bible, it’s Mother Nature,” Diaz said. “It’s the tradition…the culture. We are Hispanic, we just come from a different culture.”

If it were up to Erica Diaz – the reverend’s granddaughter, who is gay and was discharged from the U.S. Navy in 2008 because of her sexual orientation – she, other lesbians and all gay people would be able to exchange vows with whomever they want.

Marriage Equality Foe: Pollsters Biased for Gay Marriage

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

Peter SpriggPeter Sprigg of the Christian conservative group Family Research Council is the latest gay rights foe to suggest pollsters are biased in favor of gay marriage.

After six nationwide polls have shown a majority of Americans narrowly support giving gay and lesbian couples the right to marry, opponents of the institution have gone on the defensive, claiming that either the pollsters are biased or respondents have been bullied into silence.

A poll released two weeks ago by Gallup found 53% percent of Americans in support of the legalization of gay marriage, a 9-point increase since last year’s poll. Forty-five percent of Americans remain opposed to marriage equality, including a large majority (72%) of Republicans.
