NY: Why Won’t Bloomberg Stop Supporting Anti Gay Republicans?

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

New York Marriage EqualityAn invitation-only speech by Mayor Mike Bloomberg laying out the case for same-sex marriage at Cooper Union in New York has garnered a lot of uncritical praise. Bloomberg’s stirring words, however, have not been backed up by the most effective and meaningful action that he could take: ending his personal bankrolling of the anti-gay Republican majority in the New York Senate that voted unanimously against this marriage equality in 2009.

Bloomberg has been asked by reporters if he will stop donating to Senators who oppose this bill and he has refused, saying he is not “single issue.” So while he has tried to position himself as a champion of marriage equality and to characterize it as the most important civil rights issue of our time, he has in fact been and continues to be the biggest impediment to the bill that would open New York’s marriage bureaus to gay couples.

We just saw Democrat Kathy Hochul win a special election for Congress in NY26, one of the most Republican districts in the country. Republicans are indeed a dying breed in New York, but they were able to regain their majority in the New York State Senate in 2010 long past their expiration date in this state primarily through the infusion of millions of dollars in personal donations from Mike Bloomberg. (There are some anti-gay Democrats in the Senate, too. Several have been replaced with pro-gay votes since the 2009 vote. But ALL of the Republicans voted against marriage equality.)

IA: State Senator Goes From Marriage Equality Opponent to Avid Supporter

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

Jeff AngeloFormer Iowa state Senator Jeff Angelo, who once backed a gay marriage ban amendment, will helm a new group for conservatives who support gay marriage.

Angelo is expected to unveil his new group Republicans for Freedom next week, the Des Moines Register reported.

“This debate centers around the devaluation of the lives of a select group of people,” Angelo told lawmakers at a public hearing earlier this year. “At its worst, we are being asked to believe that our gay friends are involved in a nefarious agenda. The outcome of which, supposedly, is the unraveling of society itself.”

Marriage Equality on the Front Burner

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

A flurry of activity in efforts to legally recognize gay relationships or ban same-sex marriage is reminding advocates that even though polls indicate growing acceptance, the debate is far from settled.

Rhode Island is pondering a proposal to allow civil unions, a compromise that arose after it became clear there weren’t enough votes to aim for marriage. Minnesota lawmakers voted to put a constitutional marriage ban on the ballot, and the mayor of New York spoke out strongly in favor of same-sex marriage as talks continue in his state.

In Rhode Island, gay marriage advocates say they’re unsatisfied with the proposal to offer civil unions, which provide many of the same legal benefits of marriage without calling it that.

IL: Civil Unions Supporters/Opponents Rally in Chicago

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

Chicago Anti Civil Unions RallyProtesters on both sides of the civil union issue squared off in downtown Chicago on Friday, days before gay couples are to celebrate their new rights in a ceremony at Millennium Park.

Busloads of opponents gathered in front of St. Peter’s Church, where members of Americans for Truth distributed forms to collect signatures to put civil unions to a popular vote. Meanwhile, a smaller contingent of gays and supporters assembled on the other side of the 100 block of West Madison Street to defend the law that puts same-sex couples on a legal par with married men and women.

“There’s a battle between gay rights and religious freedom,” said Peter LaBarbera, president of Americans for Truth. “We want to give Illinois voters the same opportunity other states have had. Whether they are red or blue, states seem to go the same way.”

NY: New Count on Marriage Equality Support in Senate

Friday, May 27th, 2011

New York Whip CountEarlier today, I posted an article with a list of the New York State Senators who are undecided on marriage. I mentioned that we hadn’t seen a public whip count. Well, ask and ye shall receive.

Act on Principles has pulled together a whip count. Here’s the current breakdown (at right).

The full list of Senators, including their position on marriage and all contact info., is in the AOP post here. I sorted the list by position. We need 32 votes.

IL: Five Things to Know About Civil Unions

Friday, May 27th, 2011

On Wednesday, Illinois’ civil union law will take effect, and county clerk offices across the western suburbs will start issuing applications to same-sex couples.

With the civil unions Illinois becomes one of about a dozen states that grant same-sex couples with all the legal priveleges and obligations enjoyed by married couples.

Getting a civil union license is a lot like the process for a marriage license. The couple must fill out an application — show they are at least 18 and not blood-related — and appear together at the county clerk’s office to get the license and certificate. That gives the couple 60 days to have a civil union ceremony, in which the officiator will complete the license and return it.
