TN: Governor Who Signed Anti Gay Bill Not Anti Gay???

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

Governor Bill HaslamOn Tuesday, Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam signed HB600, an anti-gay bill prohibiting local municipalities from enacting their own non-discrimination statutes and forcing them to rely on state law.

The new law voids a Nashville ordinance barring companies that discriminate against gays and lesbians from doing business with the city.

Claims Haslam to the reporter: “We’re not in favor of discrimination in any form at all. We encourage businesses to put that into their policies themselves. We just think that businesses should get to decide for themselves what they have in their policies.”

MN: Poll Says 51% Would Vote for Marriage Equality Ban, 40% Against

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

Minnesota Gay Marriage Ban PollA SurveyUSA/KSTP poll released Wednesday evening found that a slim majority of Minnesotans would vote for a ballot initiative that would place a ban on gay marriage in the Minnesota Constitution.

According to the poll, 51 percent of registered voters surveyed said they would vote in favor of the amendment, while 40 percent say they’d vote against it. Eight percent said they would not vote either way. The poll differs greatly from two other polls conducted on the issue so far this year.

SurveyUSA polled 552 registered voters on Monday and Tuesday in a survey that has a margin of error of 4.3 percent. The poll is a huge shift from a similar poll last spring that showed 63 percent of Minnesotans would vote for a constitutional ban on gay marriage and 33 percent who would not.

Minnesota Family Council Cleans Up Website, Deletes Articles Linking Gays to Bestiality, Pedophilia

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

Minnesota Family Council WebsiteThe main proponent of an effort to amend Minnesota’s constitution to ban gay marriage has deleted documents linking gays to pedophilia and bestiality, the Minnesota Independent reported.

The president of the Christian conservative group Minnesota Family Council on Wednesday defended the documents, which first came to light Tuesday on the website GoodAsYou.org. Tom Prichard told NPR that the documents get “into the nature of homosexuality and homosexual behavior.”

“The focus of this campaign is the nature and purpose of marriage – not a referendum of homosexuality per se, or its lifestyle activities and behaviors,” Prichard told the radio network. “I would see that as a separate issue.”

New York Must Provide Marriage Equality to Gay/Lesbian Couples

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

New York State is at a crossroads. The Legislature is presented with the opportunity to pass a bill that would allow gay and lesbian couples to marry, granting them access to the same rights already afforded to straight couples. This comes at a time when national and statewide polls have shown an enormous increase in public support for marriage equality. More New Yorkers than ever recognize that denying our gay and lesbian family members, friends, coworkers and neighbors the right to marry is simply not fair.

Marriage equality is about fairness. It is about ending discrimination. It is about the freedom to marry the person you love and the legal rights that go along with it.

Throughout my career in public service, I have worked for equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender New Yorkers. It is an issue that is close to me personally, but beyond that it is a public issue that has the power to change society’s perception. I believe that as an elected official, I have an obligation to help the people in my district who need it the most. It is time for us as representatives to acknowledge the will of the people both in New York and beyond and pass marriage equality legislation.

NY: Gay Cousin Writes Anti Marriage Equality Senator

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

New York Marriage EqualityDear Cousin Tom…

I read online the other day that you’re co-sponsoring a bill to declare null and void (according to NY State Law) gay marriages that are performed in other states. I can only assume that some of your constituents may have persuaded you to vote against gay marriage previously. But I am perplexed as to why you would LEAD the charge with a bill to suffocate the civil rights of many of your constituents and family members (me) while so many other states are embracing equality. WOW! [snip]

I guess the truth is that I could stomp my feet, wave my hands and yell from the rooftops about equality, but it might not do any good. What I really wish is that everybody reading this right now–all you heterosexuals–would take a moment to remember your cousin… your brother… your sister… your neighbor… your friend… your CHILD–or a friend of a friend–who’s homosexual.

NOM Defector Plans Summer Tour for Marriage Equality

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

Gay Marriage Bus TourNOM defector Louis Marinelli, who last year planned and drove the bus on NOM’s anti-gay ‘Summer for Marriage’ tour, is planning another bus tour this summer, this time for marriage equality.

As you may recall, Marinelli defected from the anti-gay organization several months ago after announcing that pro-equality activists he met on the NOM tour changed his mind about marriage.

Marinelli has posted a page detailing the tour and requesting contributions to fund it.

NY: A Change of Heart on Marriage Equality

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

New York Marriage EqualityI have spent most of my adult life in public service. I have been a Republican county legislator and treasurer and, for the last five years, the representative from the 114th Assembly District. The people I represent put their faith and trust in me to make the difficult decisions on issues where passions run high. Doing the right thing takes the courage of one’s convictions.

In 2007, my first year in Albany, the bill to allow the freedom to marry was debated for the first time in this state’s history. As a candidate for office, I advocated for civil unions. When it came time to cast my vote, I voted against the same-sex marriage bill. The debate and testimony of my colleagues on both sides of the aisle was compelling and I was deeply moved. After the vote, I said that I would continue to study this issue, meet with my constituents and keep an open mind.

For two years, I did just that. I met with people in my district on both sides and listened to their arguments. I received hundreds of phone calls, letters and emails. I met with religious leaders and others who spoke passionately and intelligently about their beliefs. In all of those discussions, the ones who moved me most were parents who wanted nothing more than to see their gay and lesbian children share the same benefits, protections and love with their significant others as their siblings and other married couples do.

MN: Could State Voters Be First to Reject Marriage Equality Ban?

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

Minnesota Gay Marriage BanThe circumstances were familiar: emotional debate, hundreds of demonstrators, and a decision by legislators to ask voters if they want to amend their state constitution to ban marriages between residents of the same gender.

This time it was Minnesota, where House members voted 70-62 Saturday night to put the proposed amendment to a statewide popular vote next year. If it passes, the state would join 31 others that have approved similar measures.

But same-sex marriage advocates say they believe there’s a good chance, given changing attitudes toward gay unions, that voters in Minnesota could become the first to reject such an amendment.
