MN: Campaign Board Says Anti Gay Marriage Forces Must Disclose Funding Sources

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

The Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board ruled today that corporate donations to groups advocating for or against a constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage must be disclosed. The Minnesota Family Council (MFC) and the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) argued that supporters of marriage equality would commit violence against their donors if they were made public. On Thursday, the board disagreed.

The campaign finance board met in mid-June to vote on how to implement new independent expenditure rules and how they would apply to the 2012 ballot initiative campaign to ban same-sex marriage in the Minnesota Constitution. NOM and MFC argued that no disclosures should have to be made for fear of reprisal from supporters of marriage equality.

“To require groups, non profits like the Minnesota Family Council, to disclose their donors and make their donors names public would have a significant chilling effect on free speech. Even in Minnesota already it’s gotten heated in some respects,” Prichard told the board. “The concern is harassment, property damage, a chilling effect. If I know I have to disclose my name, I’m not going to get involved with the Minnesota Family Council.”

RI: Bishop Says God Will Pass Judgment for Civil Unions Bill

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Bishop Thomas TobinRev. Thomas J. Tobin, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence, on Thursday sent a warning to Rhode Islanders of God’s wrath for the passage of same-sex civil unions, and forbade Catholics from entering into such unions.

“Almighty God will, in His own time and way, pass judgment upon our state, its leaders and citizens, for abandoning His commands and embracing public immorality,” Tobin said, in a statement.

“The concept of civil unions is a social experiment that promotes an immoral lifestyle, is a mockery of the institution of marriage as designed by God, undermines the well-being of our families, and poses a threat to religious liberty.

CA: Gay Couple Ask 9th Circuit to Hear Defense of Marriage Act Case

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Just days after the Justice Department filed an appeal of a ruling declaring the federal ban on gay marriage unconstitutional, lawyers for a same-sex couple at the center of a bankruptcy dispute upped the ante by asking the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to take the case.

The Justice Department appealed the bankruptcy-court ruling Monday that declared the Defense of Marriage Act as unconstitutional. Such appeals of bankruptcy-court decisions would be heard by the U.S. District Court.

But lawyers for the couple involved in the bankruptcy case are seeking to skip that step and go right to appeals court.

FiveThirtyEight’s Nate Silver Updates Marriage Equality Predictions

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Nate Silver on Gay MarriageLast week’s passage of a bill to make New York’s marriage law gender-neutral may accelerate efforts to put the issue before voters in other states.

A measure to ban same-sex marriage in Minnesota’s Constitution is already scheduled to be on the ballot in 2012, and one could follow in North Carolina. But with relatively few states now holding neutral positions on same-sex marriage, there may be efforts to repeal constitutional bans that already exist, such as in California and Oregon.

It is high time, therefore, to revisit the model that I originally built in 2009, which aims to predict the percentage of the vote that gay marriage-related ballot initiatives will receive.

NY: Andrew Cuomo On How He Got Marriage Equality Done

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Governor Andrew Cuomo“I don’t know if we get another one like this again.” With a tone best described as triumphant wonderment, those are the words New York Governor Andrew Cuomo chose to begin his account of how he led the state’s leading marriage equality advocates to victory on June 24.

In an interview with Gay City News four days after that win, the governor said, “Let’s face it, this was a long shot,” when asked where his confidence in winning the battle during his first six months in office came from.

“I didn’t have confidence,” Cuomo continued. “I had commitment to make the effort to get this done.”

NY: Gay Wedding Expo Planned for July 25th

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

New York Gay Wedding ExpoIn celebration of last week’s gay marriage victory, Brooklyn residents gathered at Borough Hall Wednesday night to break out the bubbly at Love is Love, a champagne toast hosted by Borough President Marty Markowitz.

Two versions of “wedding” cake were served–one featuring man-and-man, the other woman-and-woman. Markowitz kicked things off under a rainbow-colored Chuppah, or covering, traditionally used during Jewish wedding ceremonies, with more than 100 LGBT supporters showing up to partake in the festivities.

And though same-sex unions will not be legal until July 24, Markowitz and other elected officials said they couldn’t wait to get an expected wave of invitations from gay couples, who after years of fighting for marriage equality, finally have a chance to walk down the aisle or hoist their own Chuppah.

ME: Marriage Equality Initiative Launched for 2012

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

EqualityMaine and Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) are announcing later this morning that they are launching a citizen’s initiative to bring marriage equality back to the voters of Maine in 2012.

The announcement comes after 18 months of ongoing public education and two new polls showing 53% of Mainers supporting marriage equality. This afternoon Methodist Pastor Michael Gray will submit the following language to the Sec. of State for review:

“Do you favor a law allowing marriage licenses for same-sex couples that protects religious freedom by ensuring no religion or clergy be required to perform such a marriage in violation of their religious beliefs?”

NY: Will Gays Support GOP Senators Who Voted for Marriage Equality?

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

As one anti-gay marriage group sees it, they make up the bulk of “New York Senators that Betrayed Marriage.” Their bio photos appearing, black-and-white, in a newly minted flyer, the four Republican senators who voted in favor of marriage equality Friday are a prime target of a campaign launched by the National Organization for Marriage — one that claims to be pouring at least $2 million into the battle.

Whether that dollar figure is accurate — or how it will be spent in the marriage equality battle at large — is an open question. NOM said it would spend $500,000 on advertising and lobbying to fight the marriage equality campaign in New York, but insiders estimated the size of their TV buy at less than $200,000, and their ground game appeared paltry compared to the coalition of advocates that raised an estimated $2 million, more than half of it from Republicans and affiliated sources.

Still, no one takes lightly the threats from NOM and other marriage equality opponents, including the Conservative Party of New York State, which has vowed to withhold its influential endorsement, and possibly mount primary challenges against, any Republican who voted for the bill. The fate of the four senators, whom Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, called “people of courage,” will send a signal to other states where advocates hope to carry momentum next, and it will provide the ultimate testimony to how the gay community treats its friends, regardless of party affiliation.

WA: Seattle Mayor Voices Support for Marriage Equality Bill

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn phoned state Sen.Ed Murray earlier this week to offer his support on legalizing gay marriage in the state.

McGinn, who took part in the Pride Parade on Sunday wearing an “I (Heart) New York” T-shirt, said an interview Wednesday that marriage is a powerful institution and “gays and lesbians should be able to share in that.”

In a phone call from Chicago, where McGinn is attending the Clinton Global Initiative conference, McGinn said he also thought it was important for him to tell Murray that as the leader of the city, he supports gay marriage.

Will Supreme Court Deliberation of The Defense of Marriage Act Affect the 2012 Elections?

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

With 13.9 million people unemployed, two million more than when Barack Obama took office, the economy is at the forefront of the 2012 campaign, already underway with a crop of GOP candidates eager to criticize president’s policies.

But don’t discount same-sex marriage as a potent influence on voters in this election cycle. Next year, the Supreme Court might consider the constitutionality of one section of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA, which defines marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

If the Supreme Court agreed prior to Election Day that it would consider a challenge to DOMA, that would place the marriage issue squarely in the middle of the presidential campaign.
