NY: Marriage Equality Victory’s Lessons for Immigration Reform

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

New York Gay WeddingsUltimately, New York enacted gay marriage because the issue became personal. Legislators previously opposed to gay marriage and key Republicans previously uninvolved both moved into the “yes” camp out of personal relationships with gay and lesbian family members. Grassroots activism and Governor Andrew Cuomo’s political savvy joined with people’s unwillingness to discriminate against gays and lesbians who they cared about to dramatically turn the political tide.

The same approach could also create a breakthrough on immigration reform. As New York’s victory was being celebrated, journalist Jose Antonio Vargas’ emotional memoir of his life as an undocumented immigrant (“Outlaw”) appeared in the June 26 New York Times Magazine. On the heels of last fall’s march by four undocumented students in support of the DREAM Act, Vargas’ visceral account of the immorality of current U.S. immigration policy could lead to a wave of undocumented immigrants telling their stories; while this risks deportation, such a powerful strategy appears necessary to personalize the issue and broaden support for reform.

There are obvious differences between the struggles for gay marriage and comprehensive immigration reform. The latter requires federal action, benefits primarily non-whites with much lower incomes and political power, and has far greater electoral implications. Further, while the declining political clout of the Catholic Church reduced opposition to gay marriage, this weakening has also reduced the Church’s power to positively impact immigration reform efforts.

Conservative David Frum: We Were Wrong About Gay Marriage

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

David FrumI was a strong opponent of same-sex marriage. Fourteen years ago, Andrew Sullivan and I forcefully debated the issue at length online (at a time when online debate was a brand new thing). Yet I find myself strangely untroubled by New York state’s vote to authorize same-sex marriage — a vote that probably signals that most of “blue” states will follow within the next 10 years.

I don’t think I’m alone in my reaction either. Most conservatives have reacted with calm — if not outright approval — to New York’s dramatic decision.

Why? The short answer is that the case against same-sex marriage has been tested against reality. The case has not passed its test. Since 1997, same-sex marriage has evolved from talk to fact.

MN: Next Likely Battleground for Marriage Equality

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

With New York now gearing up for same-sex weddings, the battle lines are forming for the next skirmishes over gay marriage — and the most dramatic could come in Minnesota.

Gay-marriage supporters in the Land of 10,000 Lakes will be working fervently to end a 31-state losing streak at the polls and defeat a proposed amendment on the 2012 ballot that would limit marriage to one-man, one-woman unions. It’s expected to be a closely fought campaign, attracting extensive out-of-state resources.

“The other side is certainly desperate for a victory at the ballot box. We expect to be outspent,” said Jason Adkins, executive director of the Minnesota Catholic Conference and a member of the coalition supporting the amendment.

RI: Proposed Amendment Would Gut Civil Unions Bill

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

Religious exemptions have not been uncommon when it comes to marriage equality legislation, but the one in Rhode Island appears to be going far beyond the pale with regards to trying to protect people’s religious beliefs. In this case, it is trying to allow people to completely ignore civil unions based upon religious beliefs. The Corvese Amendment adds insult to injury. To begin with, Rhode Island is not going for Civil Rights entirely, but this, according to ThinkProgress, would mean that “religiously affiliated schools, hospitals, and businesses could completely ignore any civil union and deny couples the rights those unions are meant to accord.”

The amendment has been strongly condemned by Marriage Equality Rhode Island. It reads:

15-3.1-5. Conscience and religious organizations protected. – (a) Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the contrary, no religious or denominational organization, no organization operated for charitable or educational purpose which is supervised or controlled by or in connection with a religious organization, and no individual employed by any of the foregoing organizations, while acting in the scope of that employment, shall be required:

LGBT Equality in the US – Chart

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

Joe.My.God brings to our attention this great chart, showing graphically the progress we’ve made since 1960 from being illegal in all 50 US states to having recognition of our relationships for almost 40% of the population. Very cool.

NY: Catholic Church to Ban Pro Gay Lawmakers from Church Events?

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

Religious leaders on Saturday slammed New York state’s new marriage equality law, and vowed to ban lawmakers who supported the measure from Catholic church and school events.

Nicholas DiMarzio

Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio, of the diocese of Brooklyn, called on all Catholic schools to reject any honor bestowed upon them by Gov. [Andrew] Cuomo, who played a pivotal role in getting the bill passed.

He further asked all pastors and principals to “not invite any state legislator to speak or be present at any parish or school celebration.” [...]

“The state should not be concerned about regulating affection.”

WI: Voters Would Likely Reject Marriage Equality Ban Today

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

New York just became the sixth state to legalize same-sex marriage. Wisconsin won’t be the seventh. We, in our wisdom, adopted a constitutional amendment a few years ago immortalizing a bigoted ban that has outlived its usefulness.

That was in 2006. Citizens of the state voted overwhelmingly to make gay marriage and so-called “civil unions” illegal forever. Marriage in the state was already limited to men and women but proponents of the amendment feared some future legislature might actually want to treat people as equals.

I doubt very much such a constitutional amendment could be adopted in Wisconsin today. Even with our right-wing governor and state Legislature my guess is that the culture has changed so radically that a majority of voters would find it silly to create such a permanent ban.

NY: State Gets Ready for Gay Weddings

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

New York Gay WeddingsHours after Friday’s historic vote, city and state officials all over New York began planning for the expected swell of same-sex marriages in that state next month. The New York Times reports on the preparations:

“We are training our staff to be prepared for a very large number of people on the first day,” said Michael McSweeney, the New York City clerk, who oversees the marriage bureau. “We are going to be part of history.”

The city has struck an agreement to increase the number of state judges available to perform same-sex marriages. Their workload could swell; John Feinblatt, a top adviser to the mayor, said judges could be bombarded by requests to circumvent the 24-hour waiting period.

OR: New Poll Says 48% Support Marriage Equality, 42% Opposed

Monday, June 27th, 2011

Oregon Gay Marriage PollA new Public Policy Polling survey of Oregon voters has some interesting things to say about gay marriage, Gov. John Kitzhaber, Sen. Jeff Merkley and Rep. David Wu.

In order:

Gay Marriage: Just as the New York Legislature is approving gay marriage in that state, Public Policy Polling found that 48 percent of Oregon voters support same-sex marriage, compared to 42 percent.

It’s certainly an indication that sentiment is changing following the 2004 election in which nearly 57 percent of Oregonians voted to place a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage in the state. In the last year, Basic Rights Oregon has launched an effort to boost support for gay marriage and has talked about launching a ballot measure to repeal the ban as soon as 2012.

Methodist Ministers in New England to Defy Church, Marry Gay, Lesbian Couples

Monday, June 27th, 2011

More than 100 Methodist ministers in New England have pledged to marry gay couples in defiance of the denomination’s national leadership, which maintains a ban on same-sex unions.

Roughly 1 out of 9 Methodist clergy in the region signed a statement this month pledging to open their churches to gay and lesbian couples.

“We repent that it has taken us so long to act,” they wrote in the statement.
