IL: Anti Gay Group From Pennsylvania Protests Civil Unions in Palatine

Saturday, August 27th, 2011

Illinois Civil Unions ProtestAmongst the steady blare of car horns in support and occasional obscene gestures in derision, 10 men from the American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property (TFP) protested against gay marriage Friday afternoon at the intersection of Rand and Dundee Roads in Palatine.

The group drove 800 miles from York, Pa., to stage several protests across Illinois this week following the state’s adoption of a civil union law, which went into effect on June 1 of this year, allowing same-sex couples many of the same legal protections as marriage.

After its enactment, 1,399 couples were issued civil union licenses in Lake, Cook, DuPage, Kane and McHenry counties in June and July.

Australia: Marriage Law Should Reflect the Real World

Saturday, August 27th, 2011

Australia Marriage LawsGAY marriage will not go away. The reason is simple: most Australians accept being gay as a fact of life – a matter of innate identity and biology. Only a minority holds to the old prejudice that homosexuality is unnatural, thus justifying discrimination. That was Greens MP Adam Bandt’s point in moving last November that MPs consult their electorates.

MPs reported back yesterday. Unsurprisingly, their reports largely accorded with their own views. Most Australians do not need MPs’ unreliable findings to know that many claims about gay marriage are as ridiculous as they are out of touch with contemporary norms. Coalition politicians Bob Katter and Barnaby Joyce drew cheers at last week’s anti-gay-marriage rally in Canberra, but their views are those of a minority.

The high anxiety about the issue may have something to do with a decline in religious observancy. Only one in six Australians are regular churchgoers and they may feel their beliefs are under siege. Still, their success in influencing both Labor and the Coalition to retain the last bastion of state discrimination against gay people is remarkable. Opinion polls show 60 per cent or more support for same-sex marriage.

Indonesia: Authorities Forcibly Separate Lesbian Couple

Friday, August 26th, 2011

In the Indonesian province of Aceh, authorities have forced a lesbian couple to have their marriage annulled and sign a separation agreement — but their local police chief told them they really deserve beheading.

The women, whose names were not revealed, were married legally by an Islamic cleric a few months ago, with one of them passing as a man, the BBC reports. Neighbors suspected they were both women, however, and reported them to police in the province, which enforces some aspects of Muslim Sharia law.

Rick Perry Signs NOM Pledge, Thinks Gays Are Like Alcoholics

Friday, August 26th, 2011

Fresh off a Denver fundraiser, Texas governor Rick Perry today became the fourth GOP candidate to sign the National Organization for Marriage’s anti marriage equality pledge. Thursday night Perry hosted a fundraiser in suburban Denver. Admission was said to be $5,000 a pop.

Of course, Perry’s position on marriage equality is nothing new. In a 2008 book, he wrote:

Even if an alcoholic is powerless over alcohol once it enters his body, he still makes a choice to drink. And, even if someone is attracted to a person of the same sex, he or she still makes a choice to engage in sexual activity with someone of the same gender.

Even before Perry signed the pledge to support a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, Brad Clark, executive director of One Colorado, had this to say about Perry’s book, via email:

Anti Marriage Equality Groups Try to Keep Prop 8 Hearing Hidden

Friday, August 26th, 2011

Prop 8On Monday Federal District Judge James Ware will hear arguments on whether to release video tapes recorded during Perry v. Schwarzenegger, the case that struck down Proposition 8 as unconstitutional in August 2010. Yesterday, the court released a statement stating that the hearing will not be taped because anti-equality advocates would not consent.

In response, Equality California Executive Director Roland Palencia released the following statement: “The Proponents of Prop 8 are not only trying to keep the trial tapes under wraps, but also do not want the public to see the arguments they will be making at Monday’s hearing. This lack of transparency makes clear that what anti-LGBT extremists fear most is an open examination by the public of their malicious lies and fallacious arguments.

“Unfortunately, their tactics are not confined to the courtroom. The same shadowy strategy is at work right now as these same people collect signatures to overturn the FAIR Education Act.

Pro Gay Methodists to Challenge Church on Marriage Equality Stance

Friday, August 26th, 2011

Activists for LGBT equality within the United Methodist Church are meeting in Ohio this weekend to make plans to challenge church policy on homosexuality and same-sex marriage.

The Reconciling Ministries Network and the Methodist Federation for Social Action are holding their first joint meeting as they prepare to lobby the denomination to ordain openly gay clergy, bless same-sex unions, and discard its tenet that “the practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching.”

Nearly 700 Methodist clergy and laypeople from around the nation are attending the four-day gathering, called Sing a New Song, which opened Thursday in Huron, Ohio. They are strategizing for the Methodists’ General Conference, a policy-making meeting that convenes once every four years; the next one will be held in April in Tampa, Fla.

Australia: Baptists Oppose Marriage Equality

Friday, August 26th, 2011

Australia Baptist ChurchBaptist leaders in Australia issued statements Aug. 24 opposing a proposal to change the current legal definition of marriage to include gay couples.

John Beasy, national president of Australian Baptist Ministries — formerly the Baptist Union of Australia — said members of Baptist churches in the nation “overwhelmingly support” the current definition of marriage as between a man and woman and oppose moves to change it.

Rod Benson, an ethicist and public-issues spokesperson for Australian Baptist Ministries, said there are “compelling cultural and heritage reasons” for rejecting the proposal, and for Baptists “there are also deeply held theological convictions about the nature and purpose of marriage which preclude widening the definition of marriage to include same-sex couples.”

Video Game “The Elder Scrolls” to Allow Gay Marriage

Friday, August 26th, 2011

You know what they say; once you allow gay marriage, next thing you know people will be marrying lizards and cats. Oh, wait …

Bethesda marketing and PR man Pete Hines has revealed via Twitter that same-sex marriage will be allowed in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. After being accused of being “hush hush” about the issue by a Twitter follower, Hines had this to say: “Not hush hush, just not making a huge deal out of it. You can marry anyone.” In a second tweet he clarified, ” … not any NPC, [I] just mean any male or female. Doesn’t matter what you’re playing.”

Elder Scrolls spouses, regardless of gender, aren’t just for show in Skyrim. By wooing NPCs, players can complete relationship-boosting tasks, find a roommate for the new 3,000-gold house they bought in Dawnstar, and even get a traveling companion for those lonely late-night dungeon crawls. Seeing as how Bethesda is turning these partnerships into something more than a “press triangle-press circle-groan-moan” cutscene designed to make twelve-year-olds snicker, it seems there may also be a practical benefit to having additional options when selecting a mate. Who knows, maybe that surly Argonian maid would be slightly better helping you explore the dank cave near your hut than the burly Nordic blacksmith you had one too many Skoomas with the night before.
