Australia: Marriage Equality Protest in Melbourne Targets Gillard

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Australia Gay Marriage RallyMore than 100 protesters are targeting a Melbourne function attended by Prime Minister Julia Gillard, condemning the government’s stance on same-sex marriage and asylum seekers.

Carl Katter, the gay half-brother of federal independent MP Bob Katter, has addressed protesters outside a hotel in Melbourne’s CBD where Ms Gillard is to address the University of Melbourne’s AsiaLink conference.

Protesters from Equal Love Victoria and the Refugee Action Collective have joined forces to condemn Ms Gillard over her policies regarding asylum seekers and the federal government’s ban on same-sex marriage.

Australia: New Marriage Equality Site Launched

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Marriage Equality WebsiteYesterday saw the official launch of MyMarriageStory.com.au as part of the Real Families, Real Stories campaign. The website allows people to tell their own stories about why marriage equality matters personally to them, whether they are in a same-sex relationship or simply support marriage equality.

Marriage inequality doesn’t just affect couples who cannot get married, but it affects their families, their friends and the whole community, says Alex Greenwich, National Convenor of Australian Marriage Equality.

“Everyone’s marriage story is unique, and this website aims to show that every story is special and should be treated equally,” Greenwich said.

Nigeria Set to Outlaw Marriage Equality

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

The overriding determination of most Nigerian senators to ensure that the malaise of same-sex marriage otherwise called gay marriage does not take any root in the Nigerian society, propelled the overwhelming support which the bill proposed to prohibit the practice, scaled through the second reading yesterday at the Senate. From indications, the days of the practice appear numbered, given the massive support it received.

The bill, sponsored by Senator Domingo Obende (PDP, Edo) and 13 others would have been shot down by Senator Ita Enang (PDP, Akwa Ibom) who argued that the criminal code had already criminalised gay marriage but for the intervention of Senate President David Mark who allowed the bill to proceed.

Mark’s position was that the bill should be allowed to go through the second reading and people who have objections against it could table it at that stage.

US Census Counted 130K Gay/Lesbian Married Couples

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

The Census Bureau released a revised estimate Tuesday of the number of same-sex married couples living in the United States: More than 130,000 same-sex households recorded themselves as married. Another 500,000 same-sex households indentified themselves as unmarried.

The figures provide a rare snapshot of married and unmarried gay couples in the U.S. based on the government count conducted last year, when gay marriage was legal in five states and the District of Columbia. It comes at a time when public opposition to gay marriage is easing and advocacy groups are seeking a state-by-state push for broader legal rights.

Some 131,729 same-sex couples checked “husband” or “wife” boxes on their decennial census forms, the first time people could do so since gay marriage became legal in Massachusetts starting in 2004.

CA: Release of Prop 8 Trial Tapes On Hold Again

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Prop 8 Video TapesThe videos of last year’s same-sex marriage trial in San Francisco will remain sealed, at least for now, while a federal appeals court considers arguments by sponsors of Proposition 8 that making the recordings public would endanger witnesses and damage the “credibility and integrity of the federal judiciary.”

Chief U.S. District Judge James Ware ruled Sept. 19 that the videos would be released this Friday unless a higher court intervened. On Monday, the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco issued a temporary stay, which is likely to be renewed while the appeals court and the U.S. Supreme Court review the dispute.

Ware’s predecessor, Judge Vaughn Walker, presided over the January 2010 trial on Prop. 8, the 2008 initiative that banned same-sex marriage in California. Under a new rule that allowed camera coverage, Walker approved a live telecast to other federal courthouses and proposed recording the trial for the court’s website, but the Supreme Court overruled him.

NY: Archbishop Dolan Brings Anti Marriage Equality Message to Panel

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

New York - Archbishop Timothy DolanNew York archbishop Timothy Dolan, who recently warned President Barack Obama about his move to stop defending the Defense of Marriage Act, brought his message to a panel discussion in a district represented by one of the four Republican senators who voted for the marriage equality bill.

The Poughkeepsie Journal reports on the presentation held Monday and attended by Dolan, other religious leaders and advocates against marriage equality including Bradford Wilcox, director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia.

During the talk called “The Ring Makes A Difference,” Dolan said the movement against marriage equality is “not anti-gay,” but “aimed at opposing a range of threats to the institution of marriage, including divorce, polygamy and adultery.”

NC: Listen – Anti Gay State Senator Takes On Signorile and Loses

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

North Carolina Gay Marriage FightNorth Carolina Senator James Forrester is the sponsor of that state’s successful bill to put an amendment banning same-sex marriage on the ballot. You may recall a disgusting video I posted in early September of Forrester, who is a doctor, at a town hall, saying this:

“I’ve got a few homosexual patients and I treat them just the same as anybody else. I love them perhaps even more because I know they are going to die at least 20 years earlier and it’s something I have no control over and we need to reach out to them to try to get them to change their lifestyle and back to the normal lifestyle which we can accept.”

Forrester agreed to appear on Michelangelo Signorile’s radio show yesterday which was a big mistake for him.

Scotland: Religious Leaders Call for Marriage Equality

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Scotland Gay MarriageFive religious groups have called for the introduction of same-sex marriage in Scotland. Leaders and representatives from the Quakers, Liberal Judaism, Unitarians, Metropolitan Community Church and Pagan Federation want the law changed to allow them to preside over same-sex marriages.

Senior Catholic Church figures have urged the Scottish Government not to change the law after ministers started gathering views on whether it should be made legal.

A 14-week consultation asks if marriage in Scotland should be allowed for homosexual people through a civil or religious ceremony.
