UK: Transgender Lesbian Couple Marries

Saturday, October 29th, 2011

UK Transgender Couple MarriesIt’s a story of lifetime commitment that crosses gender lines: Two British trans lesbians married after one of them had gender reassignment surgery, reported British newspaper the Daily Mail on Oct. 27.

The couple had been living as a lesbian pair for years, but neither had undergone gender reassignment surgery until now, the newspaper account said. Both Jenny-Anne Bishop and Elen Heart had previously been married to women and had fathered children before beginning to live and dress as women.

When they first met in 2004, Jenny-Anne, now 65, and Elen, now 68, were both gay men. Later, they both identified as transgender and began to live as women, considering themselves to be lesbians. Jenny-Anne eventually had gender reassignment surgery, and the two wed.

DNC’s New Anti Marriage Equality Faith Director Signed Pro Marriage Equality Pledge in 2009

Saturday, October 29th, 2011

Well, someone at the DNC didn’t do their due diligence. The new Democratic party faith outreach director, Dr. Derrick Harkins of Nineteenth Street Baptist Church in Washington, DC, recently told an interviewer “no no no” when asked about his views on gay marriage. Some folks were pretty upset that the Democrats would hire someone who doesn’t support our full and equal status as human beings.

But then a funny thing happened. A pro- marriage equality pledge surfaced from two years ago in which the same Dr. Derrick Harkins averred his full throated support for gay marriage.

NH: Rick Perry Backs Marriage Equality Repeal

Saturday, October 29th, 2011

New Hampshire Gay Marriage RepealPresidential candidate Rick Perry praised the legislators working to overturn New Hampshire’s same-sex marriage law last night in Manchester.

“As conservatives we believe in the sanctity of life. We believe in the sanctity of traditional marriage,” Perry said. “And I applaud those legislators in New Hampshire who are working to defend marriage as an institution between one man and one woman, realizing that children need to be raised in a loving home by a mother and a father.”

As he spoke at the annual banquet for Cornerstone Action, a conservative advocacy group, Perry sought to set himself apart from others in the field as a candidate with an unwavering pro-life background.

Australia: Queensland Civil Unions Bill Won’t Change Anything

Friday, October 28th, 2011

Queensland Civil UnionsQueensland deputy premier Andrew Fraser has introduced a bill to recognise civil unions in Queensland. Like many social conservatives I have concerns about this bill. But I’m not just a social conservative — I’m a gay-rights campaigner.

A civil union is an interesting concept. It has no meaning under federal law. Under Queensland’s proposed legislation a couple can opt to register their relationship.

In exchange for a couple of statutory declarations, a form and a fee, the state will issue a certificate of union. Their relationship rights will already be covered as a de facto relationship, and aside from that certificate there will be no statutory distinction between a de facto relationship and a civil union.

OR: Is it Time to Take Marriage Equality Back to the Ballot?

Friday, October 28th, 2011

Oregon Marriage EqualityBasic Rights Oregon will soon decide whether to pursue a 2012 ballot measure on marriage equality and I find myself torn. When it comes to issues of equality and injustice, I have always said to my children that you can never wait for a convenient time – we must keep fighting in every way we can.

Nevertheless, I am reluctant to go into battle again. My family was on the front lines of the 2004 campaign in a very public way — in countless media interviews and ads, as well as participating in the roller coaster of two lawsuits against the State for the right to marry. I well know the costs emotionally, personally and financially that this battle brings. The opposition is always ugly and ready to fight tooth and nail. And there’s no guarantee of winning.

I remember, too well, the days after the 2004 election, standing in the grocery store looking at people with distrust and pain wondering which among them voted against me and my family. And I remember the hurtful words within our own community turning on each other, second guessing and blaming our leaders and organizations for the loss rather than the voters.

AZ: GOP Rep Says Marriage Equality Threatens the Nation

Friday, October 28th, 2011

Arizona Rep Trent FranksArizona Rep. Trent Franks has said that gay marriage threatens the nation’s survival.

During an appearance on the Family Research Council’s (FRC) radio program Washington Watch Weekly, Franks told the group’s president, Tony Perkins, that marriage should remain a “special right” for heterosexual couples.

Franks discussed a recent House hearing he chaired on religious freedom, at which witnesses testified that the nation’s increasing support for marriage equality was eroding freedoms for Christians.
