A Primer on UK Marriage Equality & Civil Partnerships

Friday, October 28th, 2011

United Kingdom Gay MarriageLast month, the news broke that the United Kingdom was considering legalizing same-sex marriage with support from the governments of the UK and Scotland. Because of the complicated politics and legislative procedures within the UK, I decided to do a diary on just what’s going on there and what will happen before same-sex marriage becomes legal in the United Kingdom (an exciting prospect for any young gay American boy who hopes to one day marry a Prince or perhaps a gay James Bond).

Current British Law

For some background, the United Kingdom’s current marriage laws restrict marriage to straight couples but have civil unions for all gay couples which are supposed to come with the same benefits and privileges of marriage. Civil Unions were enacted in 2005 thanks to Tony Blair. However, civil unions cannot be performed in any church or religious institution (this is what can happen when you don’t have a First Amendment).

Britain’s current laws on marriage are actually to the left of many Western European countries including France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Ireland, and Denmark. And minus the weird religious restriction, Britain’s current laws are the same as numerous U.S. states including California under Proposition 8, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, Nevada, Colorado, Delaware, New Jersey, and Rhode Island.

IA: NOM Invades My Home Town

Friday, October 28th, 2011

Iowa Gay Marriage RepealThis is personal. Yesterday I learned from OneIowa that the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) has arrived full force in my hometown of Marion, Iowa.

After leaving Iowa in 1981 and finally settling in California in 1994, imagine my surprise on April 3, 2009, when the Iowa Supreme Court unanimously upheld the District Court’s ruling holding that there was no important governmental interest in denying citizens marriage licenses based on their sexual orientation. Really? My home state beat California to the punch? I was shocked to say the least.

Fast forward to September 2011 and Swati Dandekar, a Marion Democrat resigned her Iowa Senate seat to take a post on the Iowa Utilities Board. Now there is a special election being held on November 8th which the Democrats must win to maintain their 26-24 majority in the Senate. With a Republican governor and the Iowa House having a 60-40 GOP majority this is a very important race.

Time to Write or Call Your New Hampshire Legislators to Save Marriage Equality

Friday, October 28th, 2011

New Hampshire Gay Marriage RepealOur friend John Austin writes from New Hampshire:

“Today I write to ask for your help. In New Hampshire our State Representatives have decided that they want to bring up Gay Marriage again and try to repeal it.

“As a business professional I have been one that has actually had an increase in business because of couples getting married in our state.

“I have written and expressed my opinion on this bill to local officials and hope that you will also. Repealing this law results in
discrimination and it needs to be stopped.

“I hope that you will join me in the fight. Write the NH State Representatives. Without your help and theirs we might all loose the fight.”

John has provided a copy of the original bill – you can see it here:

and you can find your local legislator here:

There’s No Reason to Oppose Marriage Equality

Friday, October 28th, 2011

No Good Reason to Oppose Gay MarriageThe issue of same-sex marriage has always — at least in this country and state — been a heated one. As an issue, it’s derailed interest from more pressing matters, polarized political discourse and spawned countless protests, demonstrations and debates.

Here in Maine, a law that would have legalized same-sex marriage was voted down by the public two years ago, and today there are canvassers collecting petition signatures to get it back on the ballot and letters to the editor insisting that all citizens keep it illegal on moral and religious grounds.

It’s quite a lot of buzz for something that, arguably, need not even be a political issue — at least if you’re one of those that believes that marriage should be a strictly religious concept.

NY: Andrew Cuomo Calls on All States to Legalize Marriage Equality

Friday, October 28th, 2011

Marriage EqualityGov. Andrew M. Cuomo, hailed as a hero at a gala dinner for the state’s largest gay rights group, issued a passionate plea on Thursday for other states to follow New York’s lead and allow gay couples to wed.

Mr. Cuomo, who choreographed the successful push this year to win legalization of same-sex marriage, received a standing ovation that lasted for more than a minute from supporters of the group, the Empire State Pride Agenda.

Shifting his sights beyond New York in a way he has not done before, Mr. Cuomo demanded that the federal Defense of Marriage Act be repealed. His voice rising in intensity as he spoke, he also called for federal legislation that would bar discrimination against gay men and lesbians in housing and employment.

NH: Marriage Equality Group Asks Legislature “Where Are the Jobs?”

Friday, October 28th, 2011

New Hampshire Gay Marriage RepealA New Hampshire pro-marriage equality group is calling on social conservative lawmakers to halt their attempts to repeal a marriage equality bill passed by the state legislature in 2009, the Associated Press reports.

The bipartisan group, Standing Up for New Hampshire Families, includes the support of former state Supreme Court Chief Justice John Broderick, who said in a Thursday statement, “It would be tragic to turn back the clock to the dark days of discrimination, intolerance, and false stereotypes.”

Conan O’Brien Plans to Officiate a Gay Wedding on His Show

Friday, October 28th, 2011

Conan O'Brien to Officiate at a Gay Wedding‘BrTo commemorate his one-year anniversary at TBS, Conan O’Brien is taping his late-night show Conan at New York’s Beacon Theater next week, but that milestone won’t be the only cause for celebration.

Vulture hears that O’Brien will be officiating an on-air wedding during one of those episodes, and it’s the sort of marriage ceremony that couldn’t have taken place back when O’Brien used to tape his show in New York: a legal wedding between two men.

Show sources are quick to caution that the potentially groundbreaking event is no mere publicity stunt, and isn’t intended to make light of gay marriage — in fact, O’Brien will be marrying a longtime staffer and his partner.

Australia: Conservative MP Accuses Gay Activists of “Heterophobia”

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Australia Gay MarriageINDEPENDENT MP Rob Messenger has accused gay couples seeking marriage rights of “heterophobia” and said he would feel discriminated against if the controversial civil union Bill was passed.

In a speech in Parliament yesterday, the Member for Burnett said his opposition to Deputy Premier Andrew Fraser’s private member’s Bill did not mean he was homophobic and that homosexuals were “some of the most interesting, likeable, funny, talented, intelligent, caring, fascinating people in the world”.

As the issue continued to dominate Question Time yesterday, Mr Messenger said homosexual couples should not be discriminated against, but his Christian beliefs meant he believed marriage should only occur between a man and a woman.

ME: Marriage Equality Campaign Releases New Ads

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

The campaign to win gay marriage in Maine released two news ads on Thursday. Both ads feature straight couples talking about what marriage means to them and how they came around on the issue of gay marriage.

In one ad, Pastor Michael Gray of the Old Orchard Beach United Methodist Church and his wife Robyn talk about what marriage means to them.

“Marriage is about love,” Mr. Gray says in the 30-second spot. “I definitely struggled with the issue of same-sex marriage.”

Could Spain Lose Its Marriage Equality Law?

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Six and a half years after Spain passed a law allowing marriage between same sex couples, could Spain be about to turn its back on LGBT equality?

Many Spaniards fear the possibility that the country will become the first to withdraw that right if, as expected, Spain elects a conservative Partido Popular (PP) led government in November’s elections.

Benigno Blanco, president of the Spanish Family Forum, a conservative lobby group, has asked the PP to repeal the law.
