NC: Gay Couples Request Marriage Licenses, Day After Day

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

North Carolina Gay Marriage FightMonroe Moore and Lupe Perez, a couple from my church, requested and were denied a marriage license last week at the Buncombe County Register of Deeds in Asheville, N.C. With his cropped grey hair and gentle smile, Moore stood next to his partner of 21 years, Perez, who presented his discharge from the U.S. Army as proof of his citizenship. Their three adopted children accompanied them to the courthouse, and our priest stood behind the couple as they entered the office.

During the past two weeks, 20 couples walked into this office, day after day, and requested a marriage license as part of the WE DO campaign, launched by the Campaign for Southern Equality. With plans to expand to other Southern communities, the campaign comes in the wake of a proposed amendment to the North Carolina constitution to ban the marriage of same-sex couples, although current state law prohibits marriage equality.

The simplicity of the campaign — a request for a marriage license — has garnered national attention from MSNBC, the Associated Press and a tweet from the Ellen DeGeneres Show. A poignant YouTube video highlighting the campaign garnered more than 100,000 hits during the first week of its release.

France: Sex Change Tests Marriage Equality Ban

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

France Gay MarriageA French citizen who changed sex to become a woman but stayed with her wife of 15 years and their children is seeking legal recognition for her altered status, in a case that could reopen debate over France’s ban on same-sex marriage.

Wilfrid Avrillon, a 41-year-old computer engineer, became Chloe Avrillon after a sex switch operation five years ago and still lives with wife Marie-Jeanne, a lesbian, and their three children in the west of France.

Avrillon presented her case to court officials in a closed-door hearing on Thursday and is now waiting for a ruling in mid-December, her lawyer said.

NC: GOP Claims Marriage Equality Ban Will Create Jobs

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

North Carolina Gay Marriage FightRepublicans took over the General Assembly 100 days ago, running on a platform of “jobs, jobs, jobs” for the most part. So how have they done?

One of the four most controversial actions includes the most recent. They want you and me to vote on a Marriage Amendment to the State Constitution that would ban gay marriage. One of our facebook friends Christy Kantor had this to say, “Why are they wasting precious time and money on an amendment to ban gay marriage when it is already illegal in our state? Our economy and employment should be their top priority!”

Ok. So what about one of the centerpieces of the session? That Constitutional Marriage Amendment you and I will vote on in May. “The best situation the social scientist tells us is for a man and woman to bring up children, and that’s important for the economy as well as the children,” said Stam. I asked, “How does that help the economy?” “All the studies show that children brought up in that circumstances are better off financially, they are better off emotionally, they are better off academically, and this is important to the long run status of the economy.”

The Pressure on Gay and Lesbian Couples to Marry

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Pressure to Get MarriedI am reminded each day I park my car that the pressure will never subside. A billboard from a storage company cries out to couples tying the knot: “IF YOU DON’T LIKE GAY MARRIAGE, DON’T GET GAY MARRIED.”

It’s not the political message that’s killing me. It’s the marital call to arms.

The pressure began on a subway platform the day our daughter Luna, 6, and her best friend, Jackie, 7, saw a newspaper with drawings of double brides and double grooms. The state of New York had saddled same-sex couples with the same stress long available to everyone else: the pressure to marry. And they were starting with our kids.

Jackie to Luna: Are your mommies going to get gay married?

Luna: Mama, are the mamas getting gay married?

Me: (Silence)

Brazil: Appeals Court Says Lesbian Couple Can Marry

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Brazil Marriage EqualityBrazil’s top appeals court has ruled that two women can legally be married. It’s the highest court in Brazil to uphold a gay marriage.

In June, a state court judge ruled that two men could legally change their civil union into a full marriage.

It was in May that Brazil’s Supreme Court ruled that gay civil unions could be recognized. But the top court stopped short of recognizing full marriages.

Senator Carl Levin Throws Support Behind DOMA Repeal

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Defense of Marriage ActMichigan Senator Carl Levin will become the next supporter for the Respect for Marriage Act, making him the thirty-first supporter of this bill. That means that there are just more than ten Democrats who have not signed on to the bill. The RMA would repeal the Defense of Marriage Act.

The Courage Campaign, a California-based LGBT group, have been lobbying senators to back the measure. It was introduced by New York Representative Jarrold Nadler back in 2009. Senator Dianne Feinstein of California introduced the bill into the Senate.
