Ron Paul: Government Should “Butt Out” of Marriage

Sunday, November 27th, 2011

Texas Rep. Ron Paul says he believes the government should “butt out” of the marriage business.

During a wide-ranging interview conducted last week with the Des Moines Register’s editorial board, the GOP presidential candidate was asked: “What is the government’s role in same-sex marriage?”

“That’s my ideal — just butt out,” Paul answered. “I think a lot of the importance of marriage and I think a lot of the dictionary too. I know what the dictionary says marriage should be and is. But I didn’t vote for the marriage amendment. To me, it’s defining a word. If you want to define it one way and me another, that sounds like a first amendment issue. Why should I try to convince you of my definition? Or why do I want someone else to impose their ideas on me and make me accept their definition?

Australian Rugby Star: I Won’t Marry Until Everyone Can

Sunday, November 27th, 2011

Australia Marriage EqualityMost know him as a rugby star but David Pocock’s deepest passions have been forged by an innate sense of justice, writes David Sygall.

NEXT Saturday, as day two of the Labor Party’s national conference winds up, David Pocock will be a world away, preparing to play for the Wallabies in a Test match in Wales. But the distance won’t diminish his interest in the party’s resolution on same-sex marriage.

It’s an unusual area of concern for a rugby player. But it taps into Pocock’s sense of social justice, a world view built on the southern African concept of Ubuntu: the belief true humanity is achieved through mutual respect and interconnectedness. It’s a philosophy planted in Pocock on a farm in Zimbabwe, nurtured amid fear and inequality and sown during a challenging search for physical and spiritual reconciliation.

Kansas Group Seeks Repeal of Anti Gay Sex Law

Sunday, November 27th, 2011

Kansas Gay Sex LawWhen Gov. Sam Brownback last year issued his first executive order, which created the Office of the Repealer, he said he wanted to get rid of laws that were unreasonable, unduly burdensome, duplicative, onerous or in conflict.

Such laws, Brownback said, “are detrimental to the economic well-being of Kansas; hinder the growth of liberty and opportunities for Kansans and Kansas businesses; and defy a common-sense approach to governance. … ”

The Kansas Equality Coalition, a group that advocates for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights, wants to hold Brownback to his word.

New Anti Gay Group: Marriage Equality Will Lead to “Feminist Marriage”

Sunday, November 27th, 2011

So says David Usher of the just-formed Center for Marriage Policy, who claims that non-gay women will marry other women just to get the financial benefits of “feminist marriage.”

“Feminist marriage directly violates 14th Amendment protection against sex discrimination, and the 5th Amendment is violated at the Federal level. The Constitution cannot accept a structure of three-party marriage establishing an arrangement of government-sponsored economic polygyny as a protected, superior class of marriage under any rational-basis test.

“Secondly, the Constitution cannot accept any marital arrangement structurally establishing three classes of marriage, where the classes are crisply defined and either rewarded or discriminated against because of the natural reproductive capacity one sex is born with that the other sex does not have.”

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

Julia Gillard Refuses Dinner With Gay CouplesAustralia’s Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, doesn’t like the idea of gay marriage. Nor is she very fond of awkward dinners.

Too bad for her. In June, the liberal Australian advocacy group GetUp! won an “intimate dinner” with Ms. Gillard at a charity auction. Their bid: $31,000, AUS. Their plan: Send same-sex couples to sup with Ms. Gillard and talk about marriage equality. The result: Ms. Gillard has so far refused to set a date for their meeting.
