Australia: Pro Marriage Equality Baptist Minister Gets Reprieve

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

Australia Baptist MinisterA BAPTIST minister who faced the sack over his support for same-sex marriage has won a reprieve after a meeting that was to be held today to decide his future was cancelled.

Lilydale Baptist Church has been in turmoil since senior pastor Matt Glover said on a gay website two months ago that he favoured same-sex marriage.

Conservatives have accused him of ”opening the door to sin”, while activist Christian group Salt Shakers asked followers to pray that God would ”improve or remove” him, Mr Glover says.

NY: Archbishop Dolan Says He Was Deceived on Marriage Equality Bill

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of New York, says politicians ‘deceived’ Catholic bishops on a gay marriage bill.

While Dolan vigorously objected to passage of the bill, critics noted that few other bishops spoke out on the issue and Dolan himself wasn’t in New York the day lawmakers approved the law in June.

Writing at the blog Queering the Church, gay rights activist Terence Weldon described the response of the bishops as “muted and moderate.”

IA: GOP Senate Minority Leader Continues Anti Marriage Equality Push

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

Iowa State SenateMapping strategy. Iowa legislators looking ahead to January’s new legislative session and next November’s general election. A conversation with two state senators, democratic majority leader Mike Gronstal and republican minority leader Jerry Behn on this edition of Iowa Press.

Glover: Senator Gronstal, way too many issues and way too little time. Last session you refused to allow debate on the issue of gay marriage. Will you do so again in the next session?

Gronstal: Yes.

Glover: Senator Behn, is that a winner politically for republicans? We just had a special Senate election …

Behn: It’s not so much an issue whether it’s a winner or a loser politically. The idea, the concept is should the debate be allowed. And as I have stated previously on other issues I believe the debate should be allowed. There are only 150 legislators and where we vote in the booth will not probably affect the outcome. The question is should Iowans get to vote on it. That is all we’re discussing. We’re not discussing whether that constitutional amendment would pass or not pass, we’re just discussing should Iowans get a vote on it. My position is absolutely Iowans should get a vote on that and I think it is outrageous that he’s going to say no.

Glover: Senator Gronstal …

Gronstal: People’s rights should not be put to a popular vote. If I can put, if you can put my rights to a popular vote of the people then I can put your rights to a popular vote of the people and eventually, and eventually — well, we didn’t put slavery to a vote of the people in Iowa, we didn’t put the right to go to a school in your neighborhood to a vote of the people of Iowa, we didn’t put public accommodations law to a vote of the people in Iowa. The Supreme Court said certain inalienable rights — you either — when you say the Pledge of Allegiance, one nation under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all, you don’t say for all except for gay people, you don’t say that.

Evangelical Christian Becomes Gay Rights Advocate

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

If you had asked Kathy Baldock 10 years ago if you could be both gay and Christian, the devout evangelical would’ve told you ‘no’. But one day while hiking near her Reno home, she befriended a fellow hiker who happened to be a lesbian. As the two became good friends, Baldock had a change of heart; she began questioning everything she’d believed about gays and lesbians.

“It slapped me in the face,” said Baldock, remembering the first time she went to a worship service with gay Christians in 2007. “I ended up on the floor crying and being so sorry for all the prejudices I had. I realized that something was very wrong with my theology.”

Baldock is now a well-known leader of the straight Christian ally movement, working to change views within the faith. She became so compelled to fight church homophobia that she quit her sales job and formed the non-profit Canyonwalker Connections.

NH: Marriage Equality Repeal Vote To Be Held At Same Time as Primary

Friday, November 25th, 2011

New Hampshire Marriage Equality RepealWhether they like it or not, Republican presidential candidates are joining New Hampshire’s intensifying gay marriage debate. State lawmakers plan in the coming weeks to take up a measure to repeal the law allowing same-sex couples to wed and a vote is expected at some point in January — the same month as New Hampshire holds the nation’s first Republican presidential primary contest.

Already, candidates have been put on the spot over the divisive hot-button social issue when most, if not all, would rather be talking about the economy, voters’ No. 1 concern.

The impending focus on gay marriage carries risk for several of White House contenders — including former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former businessman Herman Cain — whose inconsistencies on the topic are well documented. The GOP candidates’ increasingly vocal support for “traditional marriage” also threatens to alienate a growing number of younger Republicans and independents here who support legal recognition of same-sex couples. That note of divisiveness could bode poorly for the eventual GOP nominee come the general election.

NC: Both Sides Organizing for Marriage Equality Ban Fight

Friday, November 25th, 2011

North Carolina Gay Marriage BanBehind-the-scenes efforts are slowly gearing up for a referendum next May in which North Carolina voters will decide whether to engrave a ban on gay marriage into the state constitution. Pro- and anti-amendment forces are assembling campaigns that will raise money and build support for their causes.

In an era of growing acceptance of same-sex relationships in the U.S., well-funded national groups that view North Carolina as a flashpoint on the gay marriage issue are preparing to get out their checkbooks. At least one is already spending in a bid to sway the outcome May 8 in the only Southeastern state that doesn’t limit marriage to a man and a woman in its constitution. The winning side may need millions of dollars.

“Money is what gives us the resources to win,” said Jeremy Kennedy, of the newly formed Coalition to Protect North Carolina Families, the referendum campaign committee opposed to the constitutional change. The salaries of two coalition employees already are being paid by the Washington-based Human Rights Campaign.
