After marriage equality in New Jersey was vetoed by Governor Chris Christie it was only a matter of time before native New Jersey boy Jon Stewart chimed in. And on last night’s Daily Show he did–making an argument our commenters are quite fond of. Specifically, what if we made fat marriage illegal?

If marriage were men and women to have children, then shouldn’t we not issue marriage licenses to infertile people or people who choose not to have children? Marriage is for companionship as in
God did not want Adam to be lonely, so He created a helper for him. Douay-Rheims Bible Genesis 2:18 “And the Lord God said: It is not good for man to be alone: let us make him a help like unto himself.”
The Bible indicates that this helper would be a companion or helper in going through life. The term is also used to describe God when He comes to our aid. Doesn’t say anything about babies or having sex. Just partners together in life. That is marriage. Further, if we run to the Bible to defend marriage, why do we allow the Governments to dissolve marriage? Why do we allow Governments to dissolve marriage for reasons in addition to what Jesus said:”But I say to you, That whoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causes her to commit adultery: and whoever shall marry her that is divorced commits adultery.Matthew 5:32 American King James Version
