Colorado, USA: Cake Shop Refuses Service to Gay Couple

Written by scott on July 21st, 2012

Colorado Cake Shop Refuses Service to Gay CoupleYesterday afternoon, 28-year-old Dave Mullins and 31-year-old Charlie Craig stopped by Lakewood’s Masterpiece Cakeshop to order their wedding reception cake — what they hoped would be a rainbow-layered masterpiece decked out in teal and red frosting (their ceremony colors).

Although they’ll be reciting their vows in Provincetown, Massachusetts, in September, the couple plans to celebrate with a reception for friends and family in Denver in October. But after bakery owner Jack Phillips listened to their request, they say, he refused it. His business doesn’t create cakes for gay weddings.

“It was the most awkward, surreal, very brief encounter,” Mullins says. “We got up to leave, and to be totally honest, I said, ‘Fuck you and your homophobic cake shop.’ And I may or may not have flipped him off.”

Illegal violation of public accommodation law. Period. There should be punitive damages beyond the value of the cake.

I think there should be a protest outside that bigots cake shop with a mock male & also female same sex marriage including a demo rainbow wedding cake & signs that have his shop logo as well as pics of his cakes branded with a crossed out red circle & the retro symbol for poison (The Green Faced Mr. Yuck) If anyone Gay or straight & supportive would like to call or visit This half baked H8 Cakery to give the owner a piece of your mind the owners name is Jack Phillips (a.k.a. The Cake Nazi) of the Masterpiece Cake Shop 3355 S. Wadsworth Blvd. Lakewood, Colorado & there phone # is (303)763-5754

I am soooo tired of hearing about Gay couples getting upset over someones views. This goes to two main areas just like the Chik-Fil-A’s Comments…The Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Religion. This cake shop did not want to make a rainbow colored cake for a gay couple…ssoooooooo what! Go somewhere else… If you came to me to provide Security for a Gay wedding, I would not do it. The cake owner, Chik-Fil-A and myself did not and do not bash gay marriage but do not believe in it. That is our right!! Understand that just as it is your right to support it and we don’t get upset at you. I would not do anything I believe in for a dollar. He did not tell the gay couple they are wrong and preech to them, he simply refused service. SUCK IT UP AND LOOK ELSEWHERE! This man owns his business and is a Christian, it is his right to not do someting that he does not believe in. Just because you want gay rights and some accept and acknowledge them does not mean every will or even has to.
By the way, the christian owner simply refused to make the cake very professionaly and the couple stood up and stated “We got up to leave, and to be totally honest, I said, ‘F*** you and your homophobic cake shop.’ And I may or may not have flipped him off.”
