Wisconsin, USA: Opposition to Marriage Equality Falling

Written by scott on July 21st, 2012

New York Gay Marriage PollMore voters in Wisconsin believe gay marriage should be illegal than legal – but opposition is falling.

According to a Public Polling Policy (PPP) survey of 1,057 voters contacted by phone conducted from July 5th to 8th, 43 percent of respondents support legalizing gay nuptials, while 47 percent remain opposed.

However, a poll conducted last August found 50 percent of voters opposed to such unions and only 39 percent in support. That is an increase in support of 4 percentage points in less than 11 months.

Time is on equality’s side. They should keep track of the ages of the respondents for the marriage/civil union questions and I would imagine that younger voters much more likely support equality than older voters. I clicked through and found that 64% of those surveyed were 46 or older. It makes me wonder if they called landlines rather than cell phones, which has the overall effect of skewing the results to favor the opinions of older respondents. Still it was encouraging to see that even with this possibly skewed sample, the support for marriage or civil unions was 69%. The amendment passed in 2006 forbids marriage or any “similar” arrangements for same-sex couples, so if Dems can get control of both houses and the governorship (good luck with that!), the amendment could be repealed.
