Maryland, USA: Catholics for Marriage Equality

Written by scott on August 8th, 2012

Catholics for Marriage Equality in marylandBefore a room bursting with reporters this morning in Baltimore, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Baltimore City Council Member William Cole, and parents of gay kids, Irma Dirkin and Pat and Jenny Nugent, spoke about why as Catholics they support marriage equality.

As practicing Roman Catholics, each speaker detailed how their faith and the long tradition of Catholic social teaching compels them to love all their neighbors as themselves, and about how their conscience calls them to support marriage equality. Some spoke of the majority support for marriage equality that lay Catholics reveal in poll after poll.

But it was the mothers and fathers whose love for their children brought the message home. As Jenny Nugent said – “I never want our own son or any of our children to be alone–in sickness or in health. I want each of them to have the security and joy of a family that they create, and for that family to have the legal protections that come with civil marriage. That’s why as a Catholic, I am going to vote my heart and my conscience in November.”
