He is not telling people how to vote, but Western Washington University President Bruce Shepard argues that legalizing same-sex marriage would help his university recruit and hold first-rate talent during a time of less-than-stellar state support.
In his latest “Bruce’s Blog”, Shepard responded to a question from his Bellingham campus by sharing a message he sent to the governor and legislators earlier this year, adding:. “. . . We have the freedom as a university to take positions on pending legislation and to share information on the consequences of ballot measures.”
Western is a longtime center of innovation in the state, from its “cluster” colleges within the university — Huxley and Fairhaven — to such programs as study of Canada-U.S. relations and ex-NASA astronaut George “Pinky” Nelson’s effort to improve science and math instruction in K-thru-12 schools.
