North Carolina, USA: Profile - Local Reverend Fights for Marriage EqualityThe Rev. Jasmine Beach-Ferrara has been a leading force in Western North Carolina in the quest for full equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender residents.

As founder and director of the Asheville-based Campaign for Southern Equality, Beach-Ferrara launched the We Do Campaign, in which LGBT people requested — and were denied — marriage licenses in register of deeds offices throughout the state as both gay and straight supporters surrounded them in solidarity.

North Carolina law bans same-sex marriage, and the Amendment One legislation sealing that ban into the state constitution passed on May 8. But Beach-Ferrara said she is energized and hopeful that such legislation will be overturned in North Carolina and nationwide.
