The First Baptist Church as labelled itself as an ‘open and inclusive’ community for over a decade but only recently voted to join the Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists (AWAB) and to allow same-sex couples to wed under its roof.
‘For us, it’s to honor our belief and to put that belief out there, that to follow Christ means to be absolutely inclusive of everyone and not have any sort of hierarchy of holiness or worthiness, which sometimes we tend to do when we’re religious,’ First Baptist Pastor Dorothy Whiston told the Des Moines Register.
