Finally, US Senate Leader Harry Reid does something we can be proud of – he stood up for gay and lesbian binational couples in the fight over immigration reform. On Top Magazine reports:
“The president said he wants gay and lesbians to be able to have a family preference,” Stephanopoulos said. “Senator [John] McCain has said we shouldn’t come up with legislation for what he calls social issues.” “If we have gay folks in this country who have children, or they come from some other place they should be protected just like any other child,” Reid said.
He also slammed the GOP for using the issue as an excuse to try to derail reform:
“If they’re looking for an excuse not to support this legislation, this is another one,” Reid said. “But the American people are past excuses. They want this legislation passed.”
The interview is here:
Senator John McCain, for his part, stuck his tongue out at the whole idea, making an either/or argument, TribLive reports:
Congressional Republicans immediately condemned the idea. “Which is more important, LGBT or border security?” asked Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., using an abbreviation for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. “I’ll tell you what my priorities are.”
We’ll see if Reid sticks to his guns. I’m not particularly hopeful, based on past experience.
