Rhode Island Senate Committee Hearing Finally Scheduled for Marriage Equality Bill

Written by scott on March 14th, 2013

Rhode IslandAfter dragging their feet for more than a month and a half since the Rhode Island House passed the marriage equality bill 51-19, Senators are finally ready to take it up in committee. NECN reports:

The Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on legislation to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry is scheduled for next Thursday. The panel also plans to review legislation that seeks to place gay marriage on the 2014 ballot as a voter referendum. That idea is opposed by gay marriage opponents. The committee has not scheduled a vote on either bill — a necessary step before the issue heads to the full Senate floor.

Don’t expect a quick resolution on this one – as we’ve reported before, the Senate democratic leadership is opposed to the bill.
