What Marriage Equality Opponents Are Saying 4/24/13

Gay Wedding CakeAnother in our ongoing series of crazy things marriage quality opponents say and do. Today will start in Switzerland, and this is a new one – a Swiss theologian is claiming that civil unions, get this, discriminate against married couples. The Catholic News Agency explains:

“Besides containing an erroneous moral message, it actually means to objectively discriminate against married people, who intentionally have engaged in a union ordered towards the task of the transmission of human life, accepting all the burdens and responsibilities of this task,” said Swiss theologian Father Martin Rhonheimer. “Conferring legal equality to same-sex unions signifies to publicly establish, in the law system, the principle of dissociation of sexuality and procreation,” he explained in an April 22 telephone interview with CNA.

Blah blah blah… it’s a virtual word salad.

Back in the US, religious “leader” Joseph Farah went on a little rant about the moral decline of America. Queerty reports:

The U.S. continues its slide from moral malaise to cultural hedonism that makes the late 1960s look like the 1950s by comparison, as support for “same-sex marriage” grows, the horrors of the “abortion on demand” crusade are revealed in a Philadelphia courtroom sans media coverage and an epidemic of sex abuse against children by schoolteachers, clergy and scoutmasters is not only ignored but results in capitulation by the Boy Scouts of America to the demands of those who would make the citizenry of Sodom and Gomorrah blush.

And Michele Bachmann supports this guy!

Radio host Dave Daubenmire, who hosted a controversial interview with Peter LaBarbera last week on sexuality and marriage equality, elaborated on his anti-marriage equality views. Dot429 reports:

Daubenmire also believes the institution of marriage is meant for a man and a woman, and if discrimination exists, it is shared by heterosexuals unable to marry multiple partners, or family members. He explains, “Marriage was originally called ‘matrimony.’ ‘Matri’ means mother, ‘-mony’ means to make. The purpose of marriage is procreation. The fact that heteros have screwed up marriage does not make it something that it is not, nor never can be. Two members of the same sex can never ‘become one’ nor procreate.” “There is no discrimination in marriage laws,” he continues. “I can’t marry a man, and neither can a gay man marry a man. However, we are both free to marry a woman.”

I’m sorry, but does even realize what an ass he sounds like when he pulls out that stupid “gays and lesbians already have marriage equality because they can marry people of the opposite sex” line?

I have some news for the fundies. We don’t live in a theocracy. Reign in your fundamentalist rantings and study the law. We are a secular nation of laws. If you don’t like that, hit the road to the Holy See, where you can live under a Christian theocracy and see how well you like oppression of the exercise of free thought. You people have forgotten that our forefathers came to this country EXPLICITLY to throw off the yoke of STATE SPONSORED RELIGION that was forced upon the whole population and you are trying to do the EXACT same thing. You haven’t learned, but you will once the courts have ruled.
