Seriously?

Seriously? Our semi-regular round-up of the crazy (and often unintentionally hilarious) things that anti-gay folks are saying about marriage equality and the LGBT community.

Let’s start down in Brazil, where televangelist Silas Malafaia spoke at a march against marriage equality. Dot429 reports:

“Gay activism is moral garbage,” [lay theologian and LGBT advocate Andre] Malafaia preached to 40,000 attendees. “Satan will not destroy our family values.” … “There is no doubt that Malafaia and other religious leaders have been able to gather people around their homophobic discourses,” Musskopf concluded. “The media has given this kind of manifestation more coverage than events like the LGBT Pride Parade in Sao Paulo, giving the impression that those manifestations represent more than they actually do.”

In the US, old favorite Pat Robertson is back, saying gays will destroy the boy scouts for sex. Right Wing Watch reports:

Robertson on the 700 Club today said that it is a “terrible shame” that a “tiny minority” is “willing to rip apart the framework of traditional marriage; to rip apart an organization that has done so much good for young people, the Boy Scouts; to rip apart certain of these other things that we have counted as important in our society; all for one thing: that the way they do sex will be accepted in the mainstream of society.” … He went on to say that it “breaks your heart” to see the Boy Scouts “torn up in order to accommodate a few kids who want to do sex with each other. It just boggles the mind.”

Seriously? He seriously thinks this is about letting some gay kids have sex together in the Scouts? I’ve got a little news for him – gay (and straight) kids are already having sex, all across the country, regardless of what rules the Scouts or the schools or even parents have for them. Allowing gays in the scouts is about not treating someone differently because of the way they were born. Would Robertson be ok with excluding Hispanics or Blacks or Koreans from the Boy Scouts? because that’s what this really comes down to.

Wonkette reports on one of Rand Paul’s aides, David Lane, who is calling for Christians to martyr themselves to block marriage equality:

Throughout Scripture, the only power that can overcome the seemingly invincible omnipotence of a Babel or a Beast is the power of martyrdom, the power of the witness to King Jesus to the point of loss and death. American Christianity has not done a good job of producing martyrs… Where are the champions of Christ to save the nation from the pagan onslaught imposing homosexual marriage, homosexual scouts, 60 million babies done to death by abortion and red ink as far as the eye can see on America? Who will wage war for the Soul of America and trust the living God to deliver the pagan gods into our hands and restore America to her Judeo-Christian heritage and re-establish a Christian culture?

And another regular here, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, freaks out over gay couples in commercials. Queerty reports:

“[T]this is why the legalization of same-sex marriage is going to be a much bigger issue than just saying we let people love whoever they want to love, that’s not the issue,” Huckabee fumed. “Will it force businesses, of course everyone will say, ‘Oh no people still have their rights,’ but they don’t. And every fear that people had has in fact come true, that this is being forced in textbooks on how marriage is depicted, we’re now even seeing television commercials portraying same-sex couples, that’s something I guess I didn’t expect to see anytime soon.”

We’re here, we’re queer, get used to it. :)
