A Catholic professor in Australia has flipped and now supports marriage equality, as long as religioins aren’t requred to marry same sex couples. Gay Star News reports:
Father Brennan, a Jesuit priest and professor of law at the Australian Catholic University, previously opposed marriage equality despite being a high profile advocate for human rights and social justice – although he had previously expressed that civil unions might be ok. In an article published today in the progressive Catholic journal Eureka Street Brennan wrote, ‘I believe the secular Australian state should be able to recognize same-sex marriage.’ ‘I also believe that this change should legally exempt religious institutions from any requirement to change their historic position and practice that marriage is exclusively between a man and a woman.
Sounds good to me – I wouldn’t want an officiant at our wedding who didn’t want to be there.
