A marriage equality lawsuit will have its day in court today in Illinois. SFGate reports:
Circuit Judge Sophia Hall will hear arguments Tuesday. Illinois’ lawsuit involves 25 couples who filed for marriage licenses in Cook County and were denied. However, Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez has refused to defend the state’s ban, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman. She says it violates the state constitution’s equal protection clause. Also, Attorney General Lisa Madigan is set to deliver arguments against the ban because the case brings the constitutionality of state laws into question.
The next chance for the legislature to pass the marriage equality bill will come in two veto sessions in the fall.
