USA, Florida: GOP-Led Group Drops 2014 Marriage Equality Initiative Plans

Written by scott on September 14th, 2013

FloridaJust like they did in Arizona, a group led by Republican strategist Tim Mooney is putting a marriage equality initiative campaign on hold in Florida.

The Huffington Post reports:

Equal Marriage Florida has decided to wait until 2016 to attempt to put same-sex marriage on the ballot, according to Johnson’s office… Equal Marriage Florida, for its part, is continuing its work to put marriage equality on the ballot, but the campaign has shifted its originally stated goal from 2014 to 2016. Vanessa Brito, who runs the campaign in Florida, did not respond to request for comment.

Note: the campaign was launched by Republican strategist Tim Mooney, who (1) aided UT’s 2004 campaign against same-gender civil marriage, who (2) helped elect TX Governor Rick Perry (R) by placing the Green Party on the ballot to split Democratic voters), who (3) is opposed by most LGBT groups, and who (4) refuses to answer reporters’ questions about these issues.

I demand that marriage equality be put on the Florida ballot in 2014. I have been married for the past 8 years, to my partner of 30 years. I am tiered of waiting. I demand to be treated as an equal Floridan.
