The Oregon Business Association (OBA), which represents more than 300 businesses across the state, announced today that it has endorsed the Freedom to Marry and Religious Protection Initiative. The initiative would make it legal for same-sex couples to marry in Oregon.
“Businesses know that the single greatest asset Oregon has to offer is its ability to attract and retain the best talent from around the world. To compete with other economic hubs and remain economically viable, Oregon must demonstrate a commitment to creating an open, healthy and diverse workforce,” said Beckie Lee, finance director for Oregon United for Marriage. “The freedom to marry is good for business, and it’s what’s best for Oregon, and we are thrilled that the Oregon Business Association has taken this clear and early position on the initiative.”
In Oregon, volunteers are gathering signatures needed to put the Freedom to Marry and Religious Protection Initiative on the ballot in November 2014. As of October 1, volunteers across the state have collected more than 90,000 signatures, each one representing an Oregonian who values extending the freedom to marry to all couples.
The Portland Business Alliance also recently endorsed the freedom to marry. And a growing coalition of businesses large and small are signing on to support Oregon United for Marriage’s effort to secure the freedom to marry at the ballot.
Formed by a group of Oregon business leaders, OBA provides bipartisan, statewide business leadership that strives to ensure Oregon’s continued economic competitiveness. Today, more than 300 businesses, from Portland to Boardman, from homegrown to Fortune 500, have joined to support OBA’s commitment to a healthy economy for all Oregonians.
Oregon United for Marriage is a broad coalition of individuals and organizations working to win the freedom to marry for same-sex couples in Oregon. We believe marriage and family are about love and commitment, working together, bettering the community, raising children, and growing old together. We believe in an Oregon that supports strong families and values freedom and equality. And we believe that marriage matters. To all Oregonians.
