USA, Indiana: Marriage Equality Ban Introduced In State House

Indiana Representative P. Eric TurnerIt’s official – republicans are going ahead with their plan to pass a constitutional ban on marriage equality for a second time.

LGBTQ Nation reports:

The House resolution filed Thursday by state Rep. Eric Turner of Cicero would strengthen Indiana’s existing ban and limit future expansion of benefits for same-sex couples. The formal introduction of the measure tees up a legislative fight that has been waiting in the wings for months. Supporters and opponents have been lobbying members of the House Judiciary Committee behind the scenes and publicly.

At the same time, marriage equality foes launched new TV ads.

On Top Magazine reports:

A group lobbying for passage of a gay marriage ban in Indiana on Wednesday launched two television spots in support of HJR-6, a proposed amendment to the Indiana Constitution which would prohibit the state from recognizing any union other than a heterosexual marriage.
Both of the 30-second spots call on lawmakers to advance the amendment to the November ballot box. “A small committee will meet very soon at the Statehouse to decide whether you get to vote to protect marriage,” a male announcer says in one of the ads over dark images of the Statehouse as a foreboding soundtrack plays.

The Indiana Judiciary Committee will consider the bill on Monday. It’s the bigots’ last chance to pass something like this through one of the US states. Let’s make it a failure.
